Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

For a commentator/analyst his criticism was weak/amateur. He needs to be better, it's just not good enough. And if he can't do it, he needs to leave and we should find someone who can.

Seriously, maybe in the full interview he went into more detail, but Gomez was right. Lalas is making himself the center of attention and adding nothing to the conversation. He sounds like a fan who has never played, not a World Cup veteran analyst.

But he's giving Fox exactly what they want

CCV with a nice goal (the winner) in his ShefU debut. They're currently third after getting promo'd from League One last year

Interesting development last week that all four pots are going to be seeded based on FIFA rankings at the World Cup. Past practice has been that the first pot is seeded and then the other three are based on geography, with CONCACAF almost always paired with Asia.

Think this is good news for the US -- if we qualify apparently we are over a 99% lock for Pot 3, which seems like it'll probably be a hodgepodge of lower-ranked Euro and higher-ranked CONCACAF/Asian/African teams. That beats being paired up with some of the craptastic Asian teams we couldn't get in the past.

Mex a near lock for Pot 2 but we can't draw them, geo rules still in place

That's an awesome new format. Credit to FIFA on that one going the club competition draw rules route.

It also gives us more incentive to win friendlies/qualifiers/the Gold Cup/Confed Cup games/etc. in the future to make our FIFA ranking as strong as possible.

Provided FIFA sticks with this formula moving forward, of course

Nice, do we have a link on this? First I've heard of it

Or do what Wales did this cycle and not play many friendlies at all to avoid hurting the ranking.

WTF has happened to Chile? They looked like 1 of the best teams in the world a couple of years ago.

We're always going to be playing from behind though with UEFA and CONMEBOL games getting higher multpliers. Also, with the geo restrictions I can only imagine how much of a problem some of the later pots could become during the draw.

Pot 1 is never going to be likely (and is something we were technically in the running for already, not a new development), but Mexico is solidly in Pot 2. That is a huge improvement for them over past draw positioning, and is something we should aim for in 2022

19 year old Weston McKennie with the start today vs. Bayern, down 2-0 at the half

Though in the short term, making it into any pot is not a given.

@BrianSciaretta: It's been in the works for awhile but Werder Bremen confirm its deal for US U-17 & U-20 forward Josh Sargent

Any particular reason as to why our young guys appear to signing with the Bundesliga as opposed to any other league? Klinsman influence? Success of Pulisic?

Germany has the least restrictions for non European players

He'll also join former Wake commit Zay Young at WB, who got in his first minutes with the youth team recently.
