The Islamic Dilemma

Interesting analysis of the use of suicide bombing as a military tactic. http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2016/03/brussels-attacks-terrorism-isis/474858/ The author is making the point that suicide bombing is not, at its source, a religious act, but rather a military tactic used to achieve military and political ends. The religious trappings around it are used to justify and legitimize the tactic.

what you've summarized is a very good beginning paradigm for framing the entire Palestinian/Israeli conflict. this is similar to what I've been trying to say in that western thinking fails to correctly characterize or even really conceptualize the problem.

this reminded me of WWII kamakazi, or the sacred band of thebes. suicide bombing is the the ultimate culmination of what every foot soldier is indoctrinated to believe. and it's almost always accompanied with elements of some sort of theology, but the true ends for their leaders are always political/economic gain.

This is an unbelievably sad story.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3509367/Muslim-shopkeeper-stabbed-death-hours-posted-happy-Easter-message.html

I like this comment:
There is very little I can add to the condolences already posted. About three years ago my brother, who was a wheelchair user but also a driver, wanted to go to church on Easter Sunday. For unimportant reasons, he could not use his car that day, so had to order a taxi. The cabbie was a Muslim, and on arrival at the church, wheeled my brother out of the taxi and up the path and into the church. As he turned to go, my brother - who had noticed that the meter hadn't been set - called to him that he hadn't paid him. The driver just smiled and said, "Happy Easter". My brother died not long after, but that gesture lived in his (and my) memory.
RIP, Mr. Shah.

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that, while in fact a Taliban-fringe group has claimed for this Easter attack that claimed the lives of 72 Christians (including 24 children), NOT ALL MUSLIMS did so. Therefore, I'm not even sure why we're talking about it; it hardly seems like a problem worthy of our valuable bandwidth.

Yeah, we were much better served by ruminating on the urination and defecation preferences of transsexuals.

technically it's the preferences of straight folks afraid to piss next to stall with a trans person in it

If it was just about the bathroom stuff, they wouldn't have thrown all the other stuff in there. I'm pretty sure Lyin McCrory hasn't read the law based on his press conferences.

Well, that discussion served at least one purpose. It succeeded in driving me out of the Democratic Party. Guess that means I need to resign my position as Treasurer of the Randleman Precinct. What are the party registration rules concerning primary voting in NC, anyway? Can you register Unaffiliated and choose which primary you want to vote in, or can Unaffiliated not vote in either primary?

I'm not interested in remaining in a political party that thinks 12-year old girls should have to use a bathroom with grown men.

Should 12 year old boys have to use the bathroom with grown men? Kid diddling crosses gender lines.

So instead you are going to join the party that is actually forcing 12-year old girls to use a bathroom with grown men?

Makes sense
