The OFFICIAL 2014 Mother's Basement MLB Season Thread - #dynasty vs. #destiny

Never seen him in person. Did see Miggy in spring training the year he won the triple crown & I was enamored by him.

man I wish baseball had replay so dumb shit like umpires forgetting the count wouldn't happen

As a Marlins fan, I don't often have the chance to be excited about things (since '03). But now, pretty sure I have a man-crush for Jose Fernandez- 1st 33 starts:204.1 IP, 134 H, 64 BB, 234 K, 2.16 ERA.

Fernandez is the best pitcher in baseball already IMO. I know stat guys hate things like "mound presence" but he is so calm and appears to be having fun. I don't think I have ever liked a player in the same division more than I like him.

There is some ridiculously good young talent in baseball right now. When you think that arguably the best pitcher in the game is a 21 year old 2nd year player and the not really arguable best player in the game is a 3rd year 22 year old. Crazy to think the numbers Fernandez and Trout could put up IF they stay healthy.

Kershaw?

You could make an argument for Kershaw, Wainwright, Hernandez and even Lee but if I were to take one guy I would take Fernandez.

(Very) early season Tigers thoughts.

I love Brad Ausmus so much. Love him on the field, what he says off the field, in the dugout, his eyes, everything about him. I love that we're actually running this year. Alex Avila tried to steal 2nd last night. Alex Avila.

Kinsler has been fantastic so far. I know he'll slump eventually, but he's done everything right so far. Casty has had a pretty solid start too, especially with some timely hitting. Needs discipline, obviously.

Not worried about Miggy. Bats in general are cold. They'll heat up.

Phil Coke has absolutely got to go. Another 3 run outing last night. He cannot get guys out. There should be no room for him on this team. We seriously need to address the pen. If Smyly is going to be the 5th starter and not a 100+ inning workhorse in the pen, and Putkonen clearly doesn't look to be that replacement guy, we need bodies in the pen. I like Krol, Reed, Albuquerque, and Nathan all fine (though they're all shaky in their own ways). Reed has been basically perfect, and there isn't much to complain about with Krol. Albuquerque has the nastiest slider I've ever seen from a Tiger, but it's pretty much the only pitch he has. Nathan has been shaky. But that's it for the pen. Joba sucks. Coke sucks. The laundry list of other guys we've trotted out have all been terrible. This was clearly the area of need on our roster, and we didn't address it at all.

As much as I've hated the fire sales, low payroll, and overly-involved owner, the Marlins are shaping up to have some serious talent down the road-
SP: Fernandez, Heaney, Eovaldi, Turner, Nicolino, Urena, Alvarez, whoever the draft at #2 this year (likely Rodon, Beede, Hoffman, or Aiken)
OF: Stanton, Yelich, Ozuna/Marisnick
IF: Moran, the rest pretty much sucks, need to work on that, but can easily trade excess pitching for upgrades. Salty at C.

So hard to project him because he can't stay healthy enough to get innings, but I would say setup guy to Nathan or at the very least specialist if Albuquerque gets the setup role.

Don't forget about this guy in the discussion of awesome pitchers:

Seriously, though, I just checked and he's been even better than I thought. Since 2012, for pitchers with at least 200 innings pitched, he's behind only Kershaw and Fernandez in ERA, and tops in the fielding independent metrics. He's pitched a lot fewer innings than most of the guys around him, but that's pretty amazing.

ETA- The Defector looks like no other breaking pitch in the game. It is well-supinated, leaving the right hand of Fernandez at a fastball trajectory before the laws of physics cease to apply and the laws of awesome take over. It has the most egregious horizontal movement in the game, with 9.15 inches of lateral break that ranks ahead of Yu Darvish's slider as the farthest-sweeping pitch in baseball.

I thought about Harvey but obviously want to see how he comes back.

Last night was just a joy to watch on both sides of the ball. I love watching Hernandez pitch, except against the braves. He was dominant last night. Alex wood & his funky motion is awesome. Braves can't buy a run for him. He's got future ace stuff for the braves. His innings limit is going to suck though.

Btw, Harvey deleted his twitter after the backlash from that picture. Lameeee.

Jose Fernandez's game score last night was 90, which is a career best. He threw 109 pitches, 77 for strikes. That's also the third highest game score of the season, behind Cueto against the Pirates (makes sense) and Andrew Cashner against the Tigers (.... weird).

Oddly enough, his career low in game score is 24, which was on the 11th against the Phillies. In a two week span he had the best and worst games of his career. (By game score, anyway.) Baseball is a funny game.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out how to search game scores on B-R, but I'm on a roll now. Time to think of more random stuff to look up.

Why do you think Cash's game is weird? 9 innings, 1 hit, 2 bbs, 11 ks, shutout - or are you just saying its weird that he could have that sort of game?

I am still a big fan of his, I'm good with Rizzo in the trade, but I think Cashner could be a top starter in the league.

The second. Just an unlikely name to have the best pitching performance of the year against a good offense.

Andrew Cashner has electric stuff; he has been clocked at 100 mph. He had 1 hitter against the Pirates last year in September when they were fighting for a playoff spot. The Padres are such an anonymous team that all of their players are under-valued.
