Pretty crazy escalation today in the protests, with at least a dozen dead protesters and police. At least 35 police officers in critical condition and likely many more protesters. Live ammunition, molotov cocktails, and anything that can be picked up and thrown is being used. Opposition party media has reportedly been shut down by the government.

Here's a live feed in downtown Kiev.

US Soccer announced today that the match in Ukraine on March 5th has not been cancelled.

Probably a bad decision...

As far as I know the only large scale protests are taking place in Kiev. Shouldn't be an issue in Kharkiv.

There have been protests in other cities, even in areas that were thought to be pro-government. This was a week or so ago. The protesters start blasting the cops with a fire hose.

What are they protesting about?

What are they protesting about?

Ukraine government backed out of plans for a EU trade agreement opting instead to stay friendly with Russia, who has been propping up their economy. Protests started as a large percentage of Ukrainians want to move towards the EU. Things have gotten progressively more aggressive from both sides with protestors taking over government buildings and the government suspending civil rights in an attempt to keep control. Opposition side wants the Ukraine President, Yanukovich to resign. Yanukovich is essentially refusing to give up any power or concessions.

A good friend of mine on Facebook has been getting updates from a friend that lives in Kiev. Here's her latest post:

Demonstrators had planned a march to Parliament, and police blocked them. Who threw the first stone? Who knows? Maybe both sides, probably provocateurs. Clearly both sides were ready to fight.

Sadly, at least 8 people are confirmed dead, there will be more before morning. Hundreds have been injured. We live next to a hospital, and I counted 45 ambulances bringing the injured throughout the day. More were brought by private citizens in their own cars. Around 6pm I stopped counting the ambulances, but in the 5 hours since, they have continued to arrive every few minutes. And this is just one of the many hospitals in central Kyiv receiving the injured today. It is devastating to the flashing lights and hear the sirens constantly.

It is surreal tonight, watching the live feeds from Independence Square, where the demonstrators are singing the national anthem as the riot police surround them and steadily move in. I fear there will be a bloodbath tonight. Some independent TV channels are offline; the metro (subway) is closed; roads into Kyiv are blocked to prevent more supporters from joining the people; cell service is reportedly blocked on/around Independence Square.

I can report that our internet, phones and cable TV are working at home, about 1.5-2 miles from Independence Square. Except, of course, the TV channels that have been blocked to the whole country.

At least 18 dead now. Police appear to be trying to enter Independence Plaza. One of the main buildings in the plaza is now on fire. A guy just escaped by scaling down the outside wall from 6 stories up.

Some on the ground twitter feeds for those interested.

RT's coverage of ANYTHING related to this should be highly suspect and avoided. They are the Kremlin's English language mouthpiece, and completely and utterly untrustworthy and exceptionally biased.

I was just speaking of their video coverage, not their politics.

I don't quite understand why the police don't go around the block thus avoiding the barricade of fire. The wall of fire is getting bigger despite the police using water cannons to try and put them out. I can't believe how many people have been out there all night with all that is going on. It's not like people are camping out in tents. There have been rubber bullets, fireworks, petrol bombs and bricks being thrown constantly throughout the night. It sounds like there's been a fair amount of small arms fire as well. A Ukrainian reporter was said to be shot and killed.

Putin reportedly won't answer any calls from Yanukovich.

21 dead now and counting
