Ukraine Protests

Look at the video posted at 5:43 am at that Guardian link. The armored vehicle used by the police to ram the barricades gets pummeled with molotov cocktails.

The protesters have to be exhausted- constant music and speeches over the loud speakers and then all the fighting with the police. Wouldn't surprise me if most of them have been up for 24+ hours.

As far as I know the only large scale protests are taking place in Kiev. Shouldn't be an issue in Kharkiv.

Or not. Opposition in a number of cities have taken over political/police installations demanding resignations and the removal of their forces/support from Kiev.

Is it me or does it seem like the protestors are winning all the battles? These security forces are a big bunch of pussies!

Its called using restraint. The government could obviously kill all those people within 12 minutes if they wanted. Two hummers with 50 caliber machine guns would do the trick.

They are trying to contain them not kill them.

In the early days of the protest they definitely had the advantage and were beating up every protester they came across. Plus, there have been a number of protest leaders turn up dead under mysterious circumstances. When they have the advantage they don't hesitate to fuck people up.

Protesters storm a military base in the city of Lviv. At one point it looks like they're trying to make off with some heavy artillery.

Lviv has declared itself an autonomous area. Military handed over their arms to the people.

Um ... Ukraine is about really have the shit hit the fan. The nation itself is already pretty split on East / West lines (the western half of the country is "Ukrainian" and speaks Ukrainian primarily - the eastern half is "Russian" and speaks Russian primarily ... VERY BROAD GENERALIZATION, obviously) ... it's very possible for the entire nation to fracture along those lines rapidly. This is how Civil Wars start.

The Berkut are much like the Russian OMON - paramilitary "police" forces that are very hard right wing (basically fascist) in nature, and pretty much always looking for a reason to fight. Hitler's Brownshirts would be kind of the historical comparison here. I doubt you see the Ukrainian military involved (the actual Army) ... this will be primarly a fight between the protesters and the Berkut.

And by the way - before we go all in on picking sides, keep in mind that there are some very nasty people involved as protesters. Many of the minority political parties of Eastern Europe are horrible, horrible entities. Not saying that paint all of the protesters with a broad brush, but there's a thousand agendas going on here.

Security forces and pro- government civilians beating protesters? Very graphic, sad, disturbing.

Following up on what Vad said, it's becoming very hard to tell what information is accurate and what is being used as propaganda by both sides. Opposition side showed what they claimed to be a Russian Spetsnaz badge which was ripped off a captured security guard. Lots of claims that Russia has sent their own forces to help put down the protests. Pro government forces claiming they are only returning fire when protestors have started opening up with live ammunition.

Whatever the truth is, it appears nearly a hundred have died today and things are only getting worse. A large number of government officials have resigned and taken up the cause of the protestors after the growing number of dead.
