What makes Master & Commander so damn re-watchable?

Never watched it, but enjoy Troy. Though, Orlando Bloom in Troy may be the least likable movie character of all time for me - up there with Upham from Saving Private Ryan.

Now, Shooter and The Mummy - so bad, but so good and re-watchable.

What do you call that genre of movie like Braveheart, Troy, the Patriot, Gladiator, etc. that were huge box office hits and starred the who's who of white male leads? They've since been replaced by superhero movies as movies everyone talks about but aren't really that good.
