Ive always liked that Elvis Costello performance that got him banned from SNL for 15 years because he switch songs and played Radio Radio which the execs said he could not.

I always liked the nirvana performance where Dave Grohl broke one of his sticks and had to wing it for a lot of the song until the drum tech replaced it, then Krist Novoselic almost knocked himself out because he threw his bass in the air and caught it with his head instead of his hands.

eta: mixed up two performances: Broken stick was during smells like teen spirit on SNL; the bass thing happened at the MTV music awards during lithium.
