Utah and Colorado Skiing

Huge "atmospheric river" coming over the Cottonwoods this week for sure! Stoked here!

Pretty much all the Utah resorts supposed to get 3 feet+ in the next week. Gonna be some happy Christmas skiers. I don't think resorts will shut down again like 2020, but they're going to have to start enforcing masks in lodges/on lifts again. As of 10 days ago, they had absolutely zero Covid requirements (in Utah).

It’s raining in park city right now and they really could use the snow. Hopefully it changes over soon or it’s gonna be miserable tomorrow.

Mammoth has gotten 5’ of snow since Thursday. Damn.

deac, I don't live in Utah, but it's my favorite place to ski. Yeah, Sierra's getting pounded.

We're going to Utah in early Feb. Going to have one night extra night in SLC on the way in while we wait for everyone to get there. Anyone have recs for area to stay for a Friday night in SLC and anything to do along with that? Everyone going is fully vaxed and boostered.

Well I will say that while Park City was fine, I don't see the need to go back there. I am not going to blame them for the snow conditions, making people pay full price when a quarter of the mountain is open is just the norm and wouldn't be different anywhere else. Slopeside accommodations were dated and over priced. I get the feeling most of the development in Park City happened in 2002 prior to the Olympics and the place has been living on its reputation since then. Weird Mormon liquor laws, if the place is a bar/restaurant, then no children are allowed in the establishment. So High West Distillery which is a restaurant, bar and shop does not allow anyone under 21 on the premises. Is it a big problem? Only if you're travelling with kids. Restaurants were meh, Grappa is good Italian, but that was it. Even the food at the St. Regis in Deer Valley was subpar. The main street area was all tourist t-shirts and high end art, one lap around and you were done.

Most of the terrain that was open was beginner and intermediate. The 9999 lift was nice, but got skied off by the afternoon everyday due to the # of people on the lift. Lines were not good, but that was due to the limited number of open runs.

However, If a group of friends all got a house in Deer Valley and I could just do that rather than Park City and not deal with hotels or restaurants, I would probably do that.

Skid the past two days at Stowe for the first time. Probably about 80% open. A little icy but not bad. The terrain here is good. Gonna be cold as hell here next week. Planning to come back next year. There’s a two hour direct flight from Charlotte to Burlington that is really convenient.

Also, a lot less snowboarders than you see out west or in NC.

The Canyons is one of my very favorites, and I've done just about everywhere in CO and UT

Have you done Telluride? Whenever I was talking to Park City folks, they always said PC was their absolute favorite, but when I asked about Telluride, they all said no.

Yes, but what did you think about the new base area? Did you try any restaurants in the area? Did you do the B&J factory tour.

We went into town at ate at Plate, which was good. Although, a ride into town is almost 15 minutes and the fare was $40 plus tip each way, which seems a bit much.

Base camp area is good and we stayed in the lodge. We were at a corporate event and had the Whistlepig to ourselves one night. It would be nice if there were a little more retail there, but it's not bad.

The cafeteria was 100% filled at lunch but proof of vaccination was required. Just takes a leap of faith.

The local staff at Stowe give off a much crankier vibe than the workers out west.

Hahaha, because out West the staff get to ski out west, while the guys at Stowe only get to ski on the East (maybe Epic pass now). Also Stowe has a much more local staff, while out west, you get people doing the one year thing more. Vail resorts poured a ton of money into Stowe base area to give it that big mountain feel. The collaboration with Whistle Pig is great for them.

Anyone else use the Slopes app? I’m a fan.

Numbers down a little bit today because I had to manage kids in and out of ski school. Should get better vert the next couple days.

Going to Tahoe soon for a boys trip/casino weekend. Pretty stoked. Only been to heavenly/North Star/ and Homewood. Boys want to do heavenly for at least one day. Anyone else got some recs? I am very meh on heavenly.

Also anyone got recommendations on new skis? My skis now are K2 public enemies that I got in like 08’. Looking for a good all around mountain ski, I don’t go as hard as I use to.

Might demo some.

Only place I have skied at Tahoe was a single day at Heavenly 20+ years ago. Was a bluebird day after they had gotten a foot of snow, so I got it as perfect as it could be. My opinion would probably be skewed toward the good as a result.
