Wake Baseball 2015

The man only won 600 games at Wake Forest along with 3 ACC titles. He might have won 4 in a row if not for a couple of injuries, yet the current AD told him he needed to plan for injuries better? He did quite a lot and knows the game. Then 1 losing season and he is out the door? Yet we saw what he allowed with Caldwell, [Redacted], 2 bad losing seasons in a row by Prosser, etc etc.
He was here 12 or 13 years before Moranda and never made the NCAAs. As soon as Montana's juco pipeline graduated we went 8-15 & 4-20 in the acc the next two years before he was let go.

There's little else to be said to or about Wellman except "goodbye."

Exactly. A good, successful AD needs to be a strong proponent of the athletic program, not a stooge for the administration.

That's great and all, but pretty much irrelevant if you don't have buy in from the administration that is ultimately the boss of the AD. Athletics don't run the show at Wake like they do at some other schools.

Integrity dictates that if you ask for donations to support athletics you go all out to win, within the rules. If there is no intention to be competitive then honesty requires that supporters be informed that winning is not the objective, just fielding teams.

See how much money that gets you.

Nonetheless if WF is not going to do everything necessary to win, they should just give up athletics or join the Ivy League.

Do you really believe Wellman goes to the mat with the administration over athletic policy?

A good athletic director needs to advocate for the athletic department don't you think? All coaches and assistant coaches need to feel he or she is in their corner and not running scared of him. The only one I have heard in a while who thought for a long time that Ron Wellman was in their corner was Jim Grobe and even that wore thin. Even though the president of the university is ultimately their boss that athletic director can still question them at times.

The President of "Our University" (Wake Forest) is very weak when it comes to supporting athletics. He has done more for Notre Dame (his previous employer) than for Wake (his present paycheck) . Look at the record. But the paychecks keep coming.

Wake's run of success was in part due to a perfect storm of Providence U closing its baseball team (effective with the end of the spring 1998 season), with those players immediately eligible, other transfers; good JUCos added to the players Wake traditionally recruited; a few recruits developing well beyond what was predicted at the time they signed and more traditional transferred. Also, Wake's tuition, while on the way up had not yet reached the levels that made it a formidable cost for many.

Once the JuCo option was effectively closed, and Wake's tuition continued to rise, the circumstances of those great years are unlikely to be repeated.

That's like saying the Deacon run to the Elite 8 in 1977 was the perfect storm of Dean Smith not recruiting Rod Griffin nor Frank Johnson, which he didn't. He took Tommy LaGarde and Dave Colescott instead. I am glad Dean took who he took and Carl took Rod & Frank. So that said, George got it done for us. He made 5 NCAA tournies, won over 600 games and had about a .625 winning record at Wake. So with him starting in 1990, I don't think it was because of Providence, it was because of great coaching. The man produced 29 All-Americans. And then just because of 1 losing season he gets dumped? He wasn't getting a contract renewal in 1998 but he won the ACC title and RW had no choice. Same thing with Dave Odom. He had to win 2 ACC titles to get a contract extension? Sense the problem here?

Odom and Greer are the least of Wellman's sins, if they could even be called sins. Odom couldn't recruit and was constantly whining about LOWF. Give another coach Chill and Timmy and they'd have done the same or better.

Greer was here over a decade without ever making the NCAA tournament before Moranda got here. As soon as Moranda left, the program fell apart very quickly.

Nice win. Good to see Pirro get a win in what could be his last as a Deac. The bats have been very quiet the last month. Mondou and Craig must be getting nothing to hit.

Yes, the Deacs stay alive for an ACCT berth. However, UVa rallied in the 9th to tie UNC and then got a run in the 10th to win 2-1. We got some help when Pitt beat VT and Miami beat GT. In other ACC games, Clemson beat FSU, Louisville beat NCSU, and ND beat BC.

Here's the current ACC standings with 2 games to go in the season.

1. Louisville 24-4
2. Miami 20-8
3. FSU 17-11
4. Notre Dame 16-12
5. NC State 14-13 (I believe State has the tiebreaker over Clemson by winning 2 out of 3 against the Tigers.)
6. Clemson 14-13
7. UNC 13-14
8. Georgia Tech 13-15 (GT beat UVA 2 out of 3)
9. Virginia 13-15
10. Virginia Tech 12-15

11. Wake Forest 12-16
12. Boston College 9-18
13. Duke 8-19
14. Pitt 8-20

Our best bet to get to 10th place may be to pass Virginia Tech by winning the next 2 against Duke and VT losing at least one more to Pitt. The only way we pass Virginia is with 2 wins and 2 Virginia losses to UNC since UVa has the tiebreaker against us (better head-to-head record vs Miami). I'm not sure who has the tiebreaker advantage between GT and us. We might, if we end up tied and GT gets swept by Miami. Of course, we would pass GT in that scenario if we sweep Duke. Sorry for any confusion, but that's a real logjam from 5th place to 11th, and lots of scenarios are possible. I for one have loved keeping up with it, and I hope the Deacs finish as high as possible by sweeping Duke. GO DEACS!

We could so easily be sitting in 4th or 5th place right now.

The turning point of the season was the last game against BC and a chance to go to 9-6 in the ACC. We were 6-0 and in good position to sweep. Pitching didn't hold...we proceeded to then lose 2 of 3 to Pitt and we are now have to fight to get into the ACC tournament. Season is over, but if Walter can somehow get a few arms for next year...we might have a decent squad. You essentially have the entire starting 8 back. Should be an even better offensive team next year.
