Wake Forest Football Recruiting

We don't seem to hit a high percentage - an impression that might be wrong- with legacy players so it is great to see this on that level- an important commitment from a promising prospect.

Like hit as they worked out or they committed? Because just off the top of my head, we have gotten commits from the younger siblings of Griffis, Masterson, Looney, and now Carney. The notable misses being Chubb and Leak.

Also excited for the addition of Tate, big shoes to fill and alot of expectations, but his brother was fun to watch and I hope he is as well.

Seems like we do better with the brothers of Wake players than the sons of Wake players.

Hall would be a great get. Every quality college team has solid DLs. The year's when WF has had their best teams, the Deacs always had a strong DL.

Hellllll yeah!!! Sounds like a great player and great dude.

2022 class might be special. Won't be large, but it'll be All quality.

All signs point to Eli Hall committing sometime soon.

It was presumably between us and UVA and he cancelled his visit to UVA. He'd be a huge get for us. He's a fringe 4 star DL.

Jalen and Eli would be a helluva start to the 2022 defense.

WF Class of 2022 Commits:

Jalen Swindell: DL 6-3 290 - Offers from L'ville, Duke, ECU, Charlotte
Zamari Stevenson CB 6-0 160 - Offers from Akron, GA State, Elon, had an invite to Duke camp, but cancelled upon his WF commitment
Brent Griffis: QB 6-0 195 - Offer from ODU, committed to WF early (November 2020); VT and several other Power V's had interest
Tate Carney: RB 5-11 198 - Offer from Liberty; NC State and S. Carolina were in contact when Carney committed to WF
Bryce McPherson: P/K 6-1 175: Committed when WF offered in September 2020; Penn State, Michigan State, Baylor and UVA all were in contact

Sounds like WF only has about 10-12 spots left. There's a numbers crunch for all teams because last year didn't count as an eligibility year, but the number of ships goes back to the limit of 85 for the 2022 season. Lots of pressure to commit early to ensure against the available spots vanishing.

The NCAA rules are screwing the next few classes of HS graduates. By forcing the scholarship limit at 85, schools are having to choose between super seniors and incoming freshmen.

IMHO, "homegrown" super seniors, that is guys who are at one school for their whole college career and all four years of eligibility, should not count against the 85 scholarship limit. If you take a transfer, then he counts as one of the 85.

ETA:

And this should remain in place until the fall 2020 freshmen, who are athletically true freshmen again in 2021, exhaust their four years of eligibility. That might be after the 2024 season or the 2025 season, if a guy redshirts along the way. Say for injury or academics.

Good summary and thank you.

Almost seems tough for some of the upcoming high school seniors that are borderline college talent. If the pandemic didn't happen some of this borderline college talent may have had some scholarship opportunities that they won't have now. You have to reset to 85 at some point but it looks like the class of 2022 will be taking most of the hit here.

And the old white guys at the NC$$ give a damn about kids/athletes.

have you seen any macro data on percentage of kids that took advantage of the extra year vs. those that graduated/left?

Random, but does anyone remember the recruit we lost to the MLB draft? I think he was a WR and was pretty highly regarded. The Dodgers may have picked him in the 6th round or so and "over paid" for the slot.

ETA, found him. Never made it out of rookie ball (well a cup of coffee in A ball). Only pitched 45 professional innings. Woof. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=uter--000kam

Good strikeout numbers but a lot of walks. Would have fit in nicely on our pitching staff.

I was so excited about that dude. I feel like I started the commitment thread for him.

I wonder why he didn't try and play football again? Its not like he would have been in bad shape after 4 years of pro ball. Go get your paper and score some TDs.
