Wake Men's Soccer - Loses to JMU in Rd of 32

Tough road ahead to get the elusive .500 record needed to qualify...Hopefully JV and the boys can make it happen.

The numbers probably tell the story so far thru 12 games:

Total shots taken: 210

Goals: 11

Opposing teams shutouts: 6

Draws: 2

end of story

A 5.2% conversion rate?!?!?

My God, that is atrocious beyond belief.

Jared has a bone contusion. No internal knee damage.

A lack of finishing is killing the team. Lacking some belief in themselves as well.

Good to hear Watts ok and hopefully can play against UVA. This team does not lack in opportunities but so far the box could be open from 8 yards out and unfortunately the ball would find it's way into the rough (golfers term for a not so good shot) ....it can't get any worse so hopefully the finishing will get better:thumbsup:

Official WFU vs UVA Game Report:

Deacs Look to "Can The Cavs" as No. 25 Virginia Visits on Senior Night
Goalkeeper Doug Ryan will be honored as "Can the Cavs" food drive promotion will allow fans $1 entry into Spry

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team will have a chance to claw back to .500 in the Atlantic Coast Conference on Senior Night when the University of Virginia arrives at Spry to face the Demon Deacons in a pivotal conference match. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Spry.

The Deacs are now 5-5-2 overall (2-3 ACC) and, despite consecutive shutouts, are 3-1-1 in their past five matches.

As part of the evening's senior night festivities, Wake will recognize goalkeeper Doug Ryan for his four years of dedication to the men's soccer program. Fans will also be admitted to the game for just $1 with a donation of any five canned goods. The "Can the Cavs" promotion is presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina in partnership with BB&T. All food will be collected by Second Harvest Food Bank

After getting blanked in two straight, Wake will be searching for some offense against a bitter rival. Virginia had a hand in ending the Deacs' season in the 2009 College Cup on its way to a national championship and again in 2010 with a 1-0 win in the ACC Tournament. The two sides have split their matches going back to 2006 (4-4-2).

Most recently, the Deacs played to a double overtime scoreless draw against the College of Charleston in a nationally-televised match on Fox Soccer Channel on Oct. 11.

For the season, the Deacs have outshot opponents 208-143 but have been outscored 14-11. Junior Ben Newnam leads the squad with eight points (3g, 2a). Two forwards, junior Andy Lubahn (2g, 3a) and sophomore Luca Gimenez (2g, 1a) have also been key offensive pieces for the Deacs.

Scouting The Cavaliers

The 25th-ranked Cavaliers are a perenially strong side, as evidenced by their run of 30 straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament - the longest such streak in the nation.

The Cavaliers are led by a preseason All-American and reigning ACC Co-Player of the Week, Will Bates, who had an assist and the game-winning goal against previously unbeaten Maryland last Friday. For the season, the dynamic forward leads Virginia with 10 goals and 24 points.

Three other forwards, including sophomore Brian Span, freshman Ryan Zinkhan and senior Brian Ownby have all tallied three times for Virginia. Bates and Span top the squad with four helpers apiece.

Raleigh, N.C. native Spencer LaCivita has started all 12 matches in goal, recording 49 saves and four shutouts. The freshman has allowed 15 goals and sports a 1.25 GAA.

For the season, Virginia has outshot its opponents 161-154 and averages two goals per match. Opponents have gotten to the Cavalier defense for an average of 1.25 scores per match.

Next Up...

The Deacs will remain home for a 7:00 p.m. match on Tuesday, Oct. 18 against a non-conference opponent, Elon, before resuming their ACC schedule with a road trip to NC State on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Series History:

Virginia and WFU have been bitter rivals, especially in the past five years, despite UVa's major advantage in the all-time series (34-7-6). The schools have split their past two meetings and are 4-4-2 against each other since 2006. Wake went on the road last year to upset then-No. 2 Virginia, 1-0, during the regular season, but the Cavaliers avenged the loss with a 1-0 win to knock the Deacs out of the 2010 ACC Tournament.

Last Time Out

After a full 110 minutes, the Wake Forest men's soccer team finished off a scoreless draw in a nationally-televised match with the College of Charleston on Tuesday, October 11 at Patriot's Point.

Fox Soccer Channel was on hand to broadcast the match as its College Game of the Week, presented by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and audiences were treated to a match full of attacking - the two sides combined for 30 shots, with the Demon Deacons firing off 17 total attempts - just no scores.

Five minutes in, Sam Fink proved to be the hero on the end line, spinning and diving simultaneously to clear a dribbler that nearly crossed in for an early Cougar score. That play would ultimately turn out to be the difference in the match, as Wake put eight shots on frame and all were saved by the Cougar's sophomore keeper, Kees Heemskerk.

Sophomore forward Luca Gimenez led the Deacs with five shots on the night, including four on frame, and was announced as the KFC Player of the Game during the closing minutes of regulation.

Notes from the College of Charleston Match

• The Deacs went to double OT for the third time this season and are now 1-0-2 when going to two extra periods.

• Wake moves to 0-2-1 on the road in 2011.

• WFU outshot CofC 17-13 and has gotten off more shots than its opponent in nine-of-12 matches this season. The Deacs are 5-2-1 when they outshoot their foe.

• Luca Gimenez had a career-high four shots on goal and was named KFC Player of the Game by Fox Soccer Channel.

• The match was the Deacons' first appearance on national TV since Dec. 11, 2009. Wake is 9-4-1 all-time in televised matches dating back to the 2005 season.

• The all-time series remains locked at 3-3-2 with the last tie between the two coming on Sept. 11, 1991. The Deacs are 3-3-1 in the last five meetings dating back to 1995.

Today In Deacon History - Oct. 14

Wake Forest brings in a 3-1 overall record when competing on Oct. 14, including a memorable 2-1 win over then-No. 7 NC State in 1990.

Most recently, the Deacs were in action on Oct. 14, 2008 and buried local rival UNC Greensboro by a 6-0 score.

Deactober

Wake Forest has compiled an all-time record of 146-81-29 (.627) during the tenth month of the year.

Since 1998, however, Wake Forest has owned October with an 80-12-13 (.824) overall record. The Deacs were unbeaten from Oct. 3, 2001 until Oct. 22, 2005 with a ledger of 28-0-2 (.967) over the 30 match unbeaten streak.

First Goal Wins

Scoring first has been a sign of good things to come for the Deacs. Since 2003, when scoring the first goal, Wake Forest is 115-7-5 (.925). Conversely, when the opponent draws first blood, the Demon Deacons are 19-35-5 (.364).

Defend Like A Demon

After keeping a zero against the College of Charleston on Tuesday, Wake Forest has already equaled its total of four shutouts from all of 2010. But the side is still nowhere near the program record of 15 - a mark set during the Deacs' run to an NCAA Championship in the 2007 season.

With four shutouts in 2011, the Deacs have now amassed 230 clean sheets in program history.

Spry Turnstiles Stay Busy

One of the best and most-attended soccer venues in the country, Wake Forest's Spry Stadium hosted its 10th-largest match when USF visited to open the 2011 season on Saturday, August 27. It was the second-biggest turnout to ever watch Wake Forest play a non-conference match. The 12th-largest crowd (4,062) in Spry history was on hand on Sept. 14 for a conference showdown against UNC.

In 2011, Wake Forest soccer fans have again come out to support the Deacs in a strong way. 20,141 fans have appeared at nine home matches this fall, surpassing last year's attendance mark of 16,748.

Another milestone for the venue came on Sept. 9 against Clemson when the 300,000th all-time fan entered Spry.

The most people to ever take in a tilt at Spry occurred on November 11, 1999 when 4,722 saw the Deacons defeat North Carolina State, 2-1, in the ACC Tournament.

I think the first official RPI is supposed to come out this week. From what I've seen from projections though has you guys in the 50s. This win will obviously help, but it's not an absolute slam dunk if you're right at .500.

Also, did you count in the ACC tournament into the above hypothetical?

No, a loss in the ACC tournament would make Wake ineligible for the NCAA tournament in that scenario. It looks like the teams needs to win three or win two and draw one to be safe going into the ACCT.

That still looks like the biggest hurdle. With their remaining schedule, the team's RPI will continue to climb through the end of the season while the RPIs of a lot of the teams around them drop.

Great win. Huge win. Well done.
