WFU Hoops: '21-'22 Roster Construction Thread: +LaRavia/Taylor/Walton/Monsanto/Williams/Sy/Marsh

Anyone else want to chuckle about Goldwire being #26?

Yeah, those transfer rankings are a joke. As pointed out on the other board, Daniel Jones brother, Bates, was rated #46. He was the 9th man at Davidson, averaging 2.6 ppg and can't play at all. Jaylen Gardner was the American Athletic Conference POY in 2019; first team all conference in 2020; averaged 19 ppg and 9 rpg over the last two seasons is rated #471. There is not a coach in the country that would take Bates Jones over Jaylen Gardner, and somehow Jones is rated 425 spots ahead of a guy who may be the ACC's top transfer recruit.

Not sure what metrics Evan Miyakawa is using, but they need an overhaul. You can put anything on the internet and people will buy into it.

without diving into that guy's methodology too much, it appears he is comparing the team's results with and without that player on the floor. So what he is saying is, ECU was a better offensive team without Jaylen Gardner.

This is problematic because here are Gardner's minutes by game over his last 9 games:

39
39
37
38
38
37
38
38
39

Obviously the time without Gardner is a small sample size and probably irrelevant to the game. It would be like evaluating 1996-97 Tim Duncan by comparing WF's stats with him on the floor and without. If Kenny Herbst hits a 3 in garbage time, that craters Tim's value.

That’s a minor problem because transfers rarely play those kind of minutes before leaving.

But it's a Bayesian analysis so it must be good.

It's the opposite of a minor problem. Those rankings have Kellan Grady who is going to KY, and is considered a top 10 to 15 recruit by all rated #76. He is rated 30 spots behind Bates Jones, and they played for the same program: Davidson.

Grady averaged 17 ppg, 5 rpg and had 2 to 1 assist to TO ratio for Davidson. Jones averaged 2.6 ppg 2.6 ppg and shot worse from the field and from 3. Other gems from this rating system: Hayden Koval was maybe the 6th best player on UNCG is rated 33 spots ahead of Garrison Brooks. Dshawn Schwartz, who was a nice, but unspectacular player at Colorado averaging 9 ppg and 4 ppg at Colorado is rated as the #3 transfer in the country. Schwartz is transferring to George Mason. He's a a good get for Mason, but there are 100 transfers better than Dshawn Schwartz. Just a spend a little time looking at the rankings, and you can see that they bear little relation to reality.

FWIW, WF clearly realized a net upgrade via the transfer market, but this site is not the source to support it.

Big day today.

We need vibes that Khadim Sy chooses us over Clemson, ECU and Minnesota.

idk what i'm gonna do if we lose another recruit to this donk, creamy

Do we know what time Sy will announce?

More importantly, if Sy announces for Wake, what time will Creamy post his minutes projections?

Apparently sometimes a third grader looks in the mirror and says, yep, this haircut just works and this is how it's going to be for the rest of my life. Next subject.

All I know is I have Sy slated to play 8 minutes at the 4 and up to 15 minutes at the 5.

Pretty crazy that there's no word on this from insiders right now. Usually these don't drag out past 5:30 but we will see.

Maybe finalizing academic stuff?

Maybe the losing coach is going down swinging.

Maybe a bagman is making a push.
