What is missing from this story?

Research shows that racial disparities in violent crime disappear when you control for joblessness. Unemployed men of all races are equally likely to be violent, particularly if they are chronically without work. But rather than viewing high levels of violent crime in ghettoized communities as a symptom of the deeper economic and social ills, black men and boys are viewed as the problem itself and treated accordingly. Jobs are promised but almost never delivered, and schools are allowed to fail as ever bigger prisons are built to manage "the problem."

No mention of bootstraps, your argument is invalid.

All true. Of course those same young men are blamed for joblessness as well.

Or it could be there were a few racist kids that wanted to kill someone. Sometimes it is not societies fault. Sometimes it is just the individual. Yes, obviously jobs help, but inferring that in anyway that society is responsible for these awful killings is pretty insulting to the 99% of society that manages to cope in tough times without killing a random white guy.

WWII vet Delbert Belton, 88, beaten to death by teens in Spokane, Washington

(CNN) -- An 88-year-old World War II veteran was brutally beaten and left for dead by two teens outside a lounge in Spokane, Washington, where he loved to go play pool.
The motive? Police don't have one. The teens appeared to have picked him at random, authorities say.

Delbert Belton, a retired aluminum company worker, served in the Pacific. There, friends say, he took a bullet in the leg during the Battle of Okinawa. He survived that attack.

Delbert Belton survived being wounded in action during the Battle of Okinawa only to be beaten to death by two teens in Spokane, Washington.

But Wednesday night, Belton -- affectionately called "Shorty" by friends for his height -- headed to the Eagles Lodge where he was a regular.

"Police are looking for two suspects. Witnesses described them as "young African American males of average build," according to a police statement.

Several factors that disproportionately impact black men over other groups. The jobs that are more likely to hire black men aren't coming back like public sector jobs, manufacturing jobs, low skilled labor. In a tight market, those with criminal records, lower educational attainment, non-white cultural norms, etc are screwed. It's a culmination of plenty of ways black men get screwed throughout their lives.

Oh and if people like you are hiring and believe that black men are solely responsible for their own high unemployment, those people like you are probably less likely to hire a black man.

Additional question: How many of you work for businesses that actively recruit students from HBCUs?

I've always been proud of Wake's relationship with Winston-Salem State. Lots of collaboration, sharing of lab space, research positions and programs for students, instructor swaps, etc. Not quite the same as a business recruiting from there, per se, but it's an aspect of WFU that I think gets overlooked.

Come to think of it, My cousin graduated from WSSU and works at Wake.

The Y was good about hiring WSSU students and graduates, but there were not a ton in full-time positions.
