Rick Barnes

Rick Barnes = John Grisham's twin

That's all I have to add.

Never made that connection before.

His willingness to go up against Dean is the only thing going for him in my mind. well, that and his NC connections are the only things that grab me. Nothing else about him is particularly memorable or impressive.

Rick Barnes would be my first choice. Great coach with great experience. Roy would hate to compete against him again. Barnes is a fighter and hard worker, like Clausen. Watch him coach today at 5PM. Then evaluate. He and Dave Odom are good friends. Wake would be his last stop in coaching. He would not be looking for another job. He would work his butt off. His Clemson teams played physical and hard. Tar Heel fans would not approve. That's one reason I would.

No thanks. Barnes is hardly adequate for the richest Athletic Deparent in the country, in a State that is full of elite prospects. I do not think his mild success would transfer to a tiny private school thats battling for 3rd place in its own state.

Final 4 in 2003?

Hardly adequate? Mild success??? 15 NCAA appearances in 16 years? I think we'd be ecstatic if WF had that record, don't you? .700 winning pct. too in a conference that compares very favorably with the ACC.....all this done in a state where football is king.

All I can say is "wow"...you're gonna be very disappointed with our next HC then....

Sorry, I just think his best days are behind him

Living here in Texas for 20+ years and seeing them up close, I would be just fine with Rick Barnes. I even met him while giving a HS coaching clinic in Houston. Dude's a proven winner and I think we could do a lot worse

How did this thread reach three pages? We are not hiring Rick Barnes for god's sake. There are more reasons than I can count why this makes no sense. I love the guy and think he's a fine coach but he would be a terrible fit at WF.

He's done that at Texas, the richest school in a talent rich state, in a football conference. He hasn't done that at Wake Forest. If you believe that Barnes would have been as consistently successful at VCU, Butler, Gonzaga, or Wake Forest then I believe you're foolish. It's a pointless argument anyway, there is absolutely no fucking way that we steal Rick Barnes from Texas. We may as well try and take Sean Miller from Arizona or Roy Williams from Carolina.

And saying that the Big 12 compares very favorable with the ACC in Basketball is like saying the ACC compares very favorably with the Big 12 in Football, it's a damn lie.

He would be overmatched in the new ACC

To hell he would. He coached when the ACC had great pedigree and took a shitastic Clemson program and made them competitive. He'd do just fine. Doesn't mean he's the best hire, but he'd be a huge step up from where we've been of late.

He won 18 or 19 games a season at Clemson and never finished better than 4th in-conference. I don't consider making the sweet sixteen at an ACC school to be a huge accomplishment worthy of acclaim nearly 20 years later.

They had one year where they won 23 games and were a blown lead in overtime away from an Elite 8. He was a damn good coach at Clemson.

Yep, Rick would be a bad idea. 27 years coaching, missed the post season 3 times. Played in the NIT 3 times. So that's what 21 NCAA appearances?

He won 15, 18, 23 and 18 games at Clemson, the first 3 during the Duncan years, which were pretty good ACC years. Oh, 18 wins was good enough to make the NCAA's, so he did so 3 of 4 years at Clemson.

Of course his current salary is supposedly $2.4M.

There were a lot of grumbling down here despite his history after last year's failure.

As discussed in the past there is some logic, probably nearly as good as the Shaka logic, for him to have interest in Wake.

Meh. He's a good coach that took a team to the sweet sixteen. Don't know how we can consider ourselves a basketball conference when 1 sweet sixteen makes someone a great coach. They won 23 games for Pete's sake.

Personally, I like Barnes. He got up in Dean's grill. That was enjoyable! Make the Smart choice!

I've been a fan of Barnes ever since that night. In fact, was sitting on the second row behind the shot clock operator - about 6 feet away from the confrontation. As someone who grew up disgusted with Carolina's influence on the conference and the media it was a refreshing moment. Granted, Barnes is a little older than our ideal candidate, but we've done worse....

A lot of similarities between the two.
