Buzz Williams to Va Tech

Just interviewed Buzz on CBS and he side-stepped the question as to why he left Marquette! If anyone can move them up the ladder in the new ACC, it's him. Admits it will be a tough job, met with his old team yesterday and new team today.......he def doesn't let grass grow under his feet....

Well, what you're saying then is that the man who hired the last two absolute morons is hiring our next coach too, right?

This board, and the last, scoffed at Seth Greenberg as a coach, but has widely accepted the Buzz Williams hire as a masterstroke. Greenberg outperformed Skip, Dino, and Bzz in his tenure.

All I intended to say is that he outperformed Skip when they were both in the ACC. In two years he finished above him both times. By one game in 2006 and by five games in 2007.
 
In case anyone is interested, here's the Buzz Williams interview summary

1. Dodged question about why he left Marquette.

2. Excited to rebuild a team in "the premier league in the country."

3. Met with VT team this morning.

4. Connecting with recruits that have signed as says there are still more players to sign.

5. "instill the culture that we want to have there at Virginia Tech."

6. Never thought he would leave Marquette and it was really hard to tell current players and signees there that he was leaving.

7. Choice was best for him and his family, but leaving was hard and he did it as best as he could.

Then he talked about the NCAAT, his style of coaching, etc.

If you tune in, he'll be there the rest of the evening.
 
To think, that could have been him on CBS talking as the Deac's new coach.....:tear:
 
Not everyone is thrilled by the Buzz hire. Trevor Thompson, a freshman forward for the Hokies, has announced he's transferring. Reportedly Buzz called him "soft" when he was being recruited and today called him out when Thompson's phone went off during the team meeting.

Bz and vtech getting some free press tonight. Wake...still irrelevant.
 
He had a fairly decent season. His best game was against Duke. This frees up another scholarship for Tech to go after the few big men still out there, competing with Wake for them.

Hokie sports site already has a huge pic of a smiling Buzz......damn, they nailed that hire!

And yes, getting some huge props/pub tonight from Buzz being on the CBS panel.....
 
Buzz got out of Marquette while the getting was good . His seat was getting hot for not making NCAA while being picked 1st in the league. But that is what you have to do as a coach.

There is no easy or correct answer to this. Both are good to great depending on ones perspective.

Personally, if I was a basketball coach and didn't have ties to either one? I'd choose Illinois as the better job, but only just.
