Celebrity Encounters

Met and drove a car in Obama's motorcade, played poker with Nelly a bunch, got "not now bro" from Kobe after seeing him in a hotel hallway in Vegas (asked him for a pic obv), got denied entering an elevator that had the Biebs in it (unbeknownst to me) at Atlantis

You actually met a car? awesome!

One of my best HS friends went to School of the Arts when I went to Wake. I would go over and visit him on random weekends. One night he introduced me to the girl who lived across the hall in his dorm -- Mary Louise Parker. We sat around and drank Blue Nun for hours. School of the Arts was a tremendous place to hang out.

oh awesome... i had no idea she went there and i have been crushin on her for years. nc school of the arts is ALMOST as cool as ncssm.

I've had quite a few, but here are a few of my highlights...

Tiger and his Dad bumped me and my dad from a bed and breakfast one week. I guess their celebrity status was a little higher than ours. I gave his dad a hard time about it and the rider they had sent the chef ahead of time. I think I took some pictures with his clubs and video games or something. We ended up across the street and saw them a couple times.

I got Doug Floutie's autograph on my ski lift pass when I was 12. He was really cool and told me I was the first person to ever ask him to sign a lift pass. We were at Waterville Valley. We ended up having lunch with him.

Ross Perot came and ate dinner with my parents and may have crashed at the crib. I kept staring at his watch because it was velcro. I couldn't get over the fact he was wearing a velcro watch and continually talking about space real estate.

Oh man. Sharing a room with Tiger at a bed and breakfast? Fat Earl definitely got some dick that weekend.

Met a bunch through work, but the first celeb that I shot video of for the news was Getty Lee of Rush. He was checking out a Richmond Braves game while I was shooting the game for WWBT.

I went to Vegas last December (first time ever) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Mid-December is a nice time to go, because the hotel rates are low, the crowds are few and the weather is fine (mid to high 50s during the day).

One day my buddy and I visited the aquarium at the Mandalay Bay and as we were walking out through the hallways leading to the conference rooms, we bumped into Mike Tyson and a small entourage of his friends and handlers. There were about 20 other people around, just talking with him, shaking his hand and taking photos. He seemed very relaxed and friendly. Later I found out that he was there to attend the annual convention of the World Boxing Council. I snapped this photo of him.

One night during the same trip we came across a film crew making a commercial for Callaway Golf.

I took this photo of Spanish golfer Alvaro Quiros during a break in the filming.

Had breakfast next to Stewart Cink this morning at the Ponte Vedra Inn. Super nice guy. He was with Charley Hoffman and another golfer I didn't recognize, getting ready for a corporate outing. He blew up at Bay Hill and was headed to Houston to try to get his game together before the Masters. Said he was thankful for the 5-year exemption from his win at the British Open.

Looked it up tonight when I got home: over $30 million in career earnings on the PGA Tour. Daaaaaammmmn!

Swear I saw this guy at the bar i watched last nights game with apetit at

Speaking of Idol..... one of my favorite Vegas stories:

Was friends with a girl who had her own restaurant for a year from winning Hells Kitchen one season and Chris Daughtry had a concert at her hotel in Red Rock. So she made him dinner and became fast friends with his wife. We were out at the club at Red Rock and the wife texted her to come hang out and play blackjack with them, so we did so in the private area, where they were the only people there. It was a pretty big room, probably 100 feet back and they were playing towards the back so while you can see in there from the main area, there was a long way from the casino floor to where they were. Hung out for like 15 minutes then went back to the club.

A buddy of mine's wife had her friends out in town for a bachelorette party, and I was hitting it off with one of her friends and the subject came up and it turned out she was a huge american idol fan. So I asked her if she wanted to meet him, and so I took her to go introduce her.

We get there and hang out for a few minutes, and then this big Daughtry fan is out by the main entryway being hysterical wanting him to sign her CD. Security wasn't letting her in and next thing we know she makes a clean break for it. She's a good 50 feet away, and we're just kinda standing behind the blackjack table watching the scene unfold. As she gets to about 15 feet, one of his bodyguards goes in for the intercept. This was the finest recreation of Terrible Terry Tate, Office Linebacker that I had ever seen, and the girl just got flat out leveled and taken to the ground.

I look at the girl I'm with and say something like "good thing you met me and didn't have to go out like that"

Turns out the chick had a fiancee so I backed off and went hunting elsewhere. Found out from my buddies wife she cheated on the fiancee like twice later on that weekend.

Few others I thought of:

Billy Crash Craddock (70s country star) worked construction for the my dad's real estate company.
I was a huge Lee Trevino fan as a kid. Met him at the GGO and then one of his sponsor's brought me one of his signature hats that he had worn during the tourney. Still have it in the attic.
When I was in NYC working on an audit job, we sat beside one of the cast members of the HBO show OZ and wrapped with him for a while. Nice guy.

Love the Terry Tate reference.

Keeping with the music theme, I had a few at our hotel during ACL 2010. Rode the elevator down with Robert Randolph, who was performing a 20 minute set in the morning for an Austin radio station to promote his set. He was staying on our floor, and we talked with him for a few minutes right before he went on. Wife's a big fan now.

Also talked to the drummer of The National at the hotel bar a few hours after their Sunday night set. They were the band I most looked forward to seeing that weekend, so I basically acted like an idiotic starstruck fan.

Third celebrity "encounter" of weekend at the hotel: our elevator was closing as Joel McHale was approaching. Tried to open it, but was too late. He probably thought I was trying to close it on him.

I guess the cast member was taking the picture while you wrapped?

One of my parents good friends was the Nascar official who stopped Sterling Marlin from working on his car during a red flag a few years ago.

I remember this.

"Saw Earnhardt do it at Richmond one time. Thought it was ok. Don't guess it was."
