WF Tennis (WS Open Starts Saturday)

This week: Keivon is back in action tomorrow in the first round of the ITF in Israel. Jon Ho got a WC into the Charlottesville ITF and plays former UVA #1 Michael Shabaz tomorrow. Romo withdrew from this week's and next week's Belgium ITF so perhaps he is still a bit nicked up. Incoming freshman Dennis Uspensky should be back in action next week and Noah in two weeks. I'm unsure of the summer tournament plans for Skander, or anyone else.

Keivon lost 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 this morning in the Israel ITF to Matthieu Roy, ranked 907. Jon Ho just lost 7-6, 7-6 to Michael Shabaz in Charlottesville. Ho is playing dubs with Damon Gooch, a former #1 player from Elon. They are in the 2nd round tomorrow.

Jon Ho in the 2nd round of qualies in the Buffalo ITF today vs. former FSU and USF #1 Dom Cotrone. They are tied at 4-4 and will complete the match today.

Keivon is back in action in Israel tomorrow.

Incoming freshman Dennis Uspensky is also playing Buffalo and will start play in the main draw either Tuesday or Wed. Will be interesting to see if he and Ho play dubs together.

Thanks for the updates - they're greatly appreciated. I'm pretty sure Uspensky played doubles with Kan in the Winston-Salem Futures. Maybe he'll just jump right in to Rubin's place in doubles and play with Ho.

Keivon won his 1st round match last week in Israel before falling in the 2nd round, but he did make the finals in dubs. Jon Ho won his first match in the qualies last week in Buffalo before losing 7-5, 6-4 in the 2nd round to former FSU #1, Dom Cotrone. Incoming freshman, Dennis Uspensky def Clemson #1 Hunter Harrington 7-6 in the 3rd in the first round in Buffalo, before losing in the 2nd round.

Jon Ho has already won twice over the weekend in the qualies for the Rochester ITF and has a very winnable match today in the final round of qualifying. Dennis Uspensky is in the main draw in Rochester, which will be released this evening. Noah Rubin plays former UVA star, 3rd seed Sanam Singh, in the first round of the Tulsa ITF tomorrow.

Love seeing our athletes playing pro tennis in the summers. Reminds me of Skip's quote, "...the team that has the most NBA players wins the league."

Very good first pro win for Rubin today over former Virginia player and current world No. 354 Sanam Singh. He will be the favorite in his next match against either Ryan Havilland, who he beat a couple weeks ago, or Ian Dempster, who can't even crack the singles lineup at NC State.

Straight-set win for Rubin today at the Tulsa Futures. He'll play another young American Ernesto Escobedo in the quarterfinals

Romain Bogaerts is one of 16 players chosen to participate in the inaugural ITA/Oracle Masters Tournament in September in Malibu. http://www.itatennis.com/AboutITA/N...ahoma_s_Alvarez_Llamas__Virginia_s_Elbaba.htm

This is kind of cool, although not sure we really need another individual "national championship" level tournament. There are now four of them total - and three of them in a two-month stretch in the fall. Seems like Oracle wanted to pony up some money and the ITA didn't turn it down.

It's just going to result in top players missing even more class in the fall - I know, nobody cares about this

Yes, Larry Ellison, one of the richest men in the world and founder of Oracle, is pumping a bunch of money into college tennis, and this event is one example. It's held over a weekend, so players will likely only miss 1 day of class (if they have class on Friday).

He's spending some serious money on professional tennis, as well: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2015-06-04/oracle-s-larry-ellison-plans-u-s-tennis-revival-indian-wells-growth
I was at Indian Wells this year; it's amazing what he's done with that facility.

Noah Rubin into the semis of his first pro tournament. Will have a tough match tomorrow against Tennys Sandgren

Rubin rolls past current world #280 Tennys Sandgren in straight sets to reach the final in Tulsa. Pretty good validation of his decision to turn pro

Rubin pulls a repeat of the NCAA final, chokes away the match serving at 5-3 in the second set and then loses the third set 6-0. Still a great first pro tournament for him. He should move up a few hundred spots in the rankings

He was up 6-2, 5-2 and then lost 11 straight games. I saw a tweet that indicated he may have been injured in the second set.

From this, sounds like if he was hurt it's not too bad. Hope he can put on another good performance in Wichita

Rubin is in the draw for the Wichita Futures, so looks like no injury problems. Looks like he'll play his first match on Wednesday against an American qualifier. Potential matchup with #2 seed and former Duke star Henrique Cunha in the second round

Noah Rubin continues to kill it on the Futures circuit, beating #2 seed Henrique Cunha who was frequently the #1 college player in the nation during his recent four years at Duke.

He'll take on Mackenzie McDonald from UCLA who could give him a good match in the quarterfinals
