Coach [Redacted]

I'm curious as to how much of the post-Dino coaching search took place before he was fired and how much after. I gotta think Wellman felt good about somebody other than Bzz before he let Dino go and then it didn't pan out.

Why do we hear different names from every "insider" who gives us a list of names that Wellman supposedly courted?

I had heard that there was someone else altogether whose name was at least floated around. Crazy.

Speculation is that Brownell among others was considered as well, even if not formally interviewed, but there was a mutual loss of interest from both parties after their initial communication.

So Clemson beat us for Brownell? I would love to have gotten Brownell. Why did he cool on us so quickly?

I have a very hard time believing us. The Wake job was considered a good one at the time. Also consider how amazingly brief the overall search was and how quickly Bz emerged as the top candidate.

I also remember Deman over on the DS board saying at the time that it appeared that Bz was the first and only choice from the start. There was no idication of any conversations with anyone else.

Forgive me if I think a lot of this may be revisionist history for Wellman to cover his ass. Wellman's an arrogant guy - I could totally see him hiring Bz and thinking he outsmarted everyone else.

When did you hear this? Again, it supports my theory that it was Bz from the beginning (with the exception of maybe a brief striking out on Stevens) and the rest is revisionism.

When did I hear the other names? Over the last year or so on the other boards. I had heard another name altogether in the week-long search last March.

It's also frustrating that we were clearly one of the top jobs available last year. I don't remember all of the jobs that were available, but Wake is clearly a better job than BC and CU. And we somehow end up with [Redacted].

This year would have been a tougher year to find a coach with State, GT and Tenn. all searching as well. We had a great opportunity and RW completely shit the bed.

As for why, it's because Wellman seems to have done most of the legwork and didn't really consult anyone else. That's just the feeling I get.

Either way, we didn't have much of an official list, which reveals the whole thing for what it was... A total clusterf***.

Any real "insider" would have had to be inside Wellman's head.

Bingo.

The One Man Search Committee was such a stupid and arrogant thing for Wellman to do.

Not that Wellman is my favorite person right now, but in fairness he was praised for this after Grobe and Prosser were hired.

I thought there was a small circle of people in both those hires. Maybe it has been so long that I am misremembering.

Brad Stevens was the first coach Wake contacted (and feelers were sent out even prior to Dino's actual dismissal) but after Butler made it through to the Final Four he politely declined.

So what would have happened if Butler had lost to Murray State in the second round (which almost happened), and Stevens was just another guy who had lost three times during the opening weekend of the tournament? Or what if they had lost to Syracuse in the next game? Perhaps his mindset would've been different.

DAMN YOU BUTLER! AGAIN!

We probably would have gotten Brad Stevens. Remember a lot of us were big fans before they made their big run.

I have to believe this to be true as well.

Making the finals vs. losing in the 1st/2nd round is a HUGE difference. Now that he is in the Sweet 16 again, he will probably be more inclined to stay because he sees that making the finals perhaps was not a one time thing.

Butler is now where Gonzaga was a few years ago. They'll get the benefit of the doubt if they're on the bubble and they'll get better seeding.

Belmont has missed their shot to increase their prestige by not winning when they're been poorly seeded and given tough matchups.

Belmont did get the short end of the stick. They were a legitimately good team that faced an underseeded 4 seed. They will keep it up as long as Byrd is there though.

Butler can easily become better than Gonzaga if they can make another Final Four.

True story: I wanted to go to Butler for like 5 years before I came to Wake....the choices we make :rulz:

Nothing like a "long list of candidates" that were considered for about 36 hours before Goodman broke the news that [Redacted] was the guy. Really puts new meaning to the definition of CONSIDERED.

Well it depends on whether or not Ron Wellman had already made up his mind or not about Dino Gaudio. If he knew at the end of the ACC Tournament, or when the Deacs lost to UK that he was going to fire him, he had time to reach out to other coaches, or at least send feelers out to see who was interested in the job.
