Gun Control Laws

If putting "semi-" in front of the description of these weapons makes you sleep better...

It's an important distinction, and one that sadly goes over the heads of many (if not most) of the people calling for stricter gun laws.

I get that distinction, but the 20 dead kids and their families and friends probably don't care.

Why is the call by the NRA for Congress to mandate armed guards in every school not an example of fair-weather federalism? We understand the left has no use for the concept of divided sovereignty, but I naively expected more from the gun rights crowd.

The call by the NRA was for more guns to be sold.

Bigger government, fuck yeah!

If the government is to spend the money and time to intrude on gun rights, then perhaps it should intrude in other ways instead. Pretty obvious. Furthermore, the NRA, while representing many of those with "less government" ideas, does not itself have an ideology to anything but to preserve the right to bear arms. That is a right in and of itself guaranteed by the federal Constitution, and thus there will be some conflicts between state and federal.

Please explain. Sounds awful meh to me.

Automatic = one trigger pull and several bullets

Semi-automatic = one trigger pull and one bullet

Revolver = one trigger pull and one bullet

The difference is between double and single action.

An honest question here. Until Obama can get some laws into action that are supposed to help, what and who will protect my kid going back to school at the start of the year? This is the question I want answered. What is gonna protect my kid at his elementary school other than the teacher locking the damn door? All of you Wake Forest educated folks (I say that because I know there are some smart folks here) come up with something for me other than the teacher locking the door or posting another "no guns" sign out front. I'm not saying you should post a Marine guard at every school (although I wouldn't object), but what I'm saying or rather asking is what are schools doing right now to be more effective and not 6 months from now. I just don't know what the answer is and sadly I don't think this is the last shooting like this we are gonna see and I pray to God that I'm wrong. Are there any elementary school teachers on here or husbands or wives of elementary school teachers on here? I'd like your input on this issue and what you think would be the most effective way to deal with this.

No kids, but my wife teaches 2nd Grade and my sister is a HS teacher. It has to be gun control. It will take time to implement, but I would hope the NRA plan would take time to implement too. Not sure throwing together a corps of armed guards for schools in a week is the worst idea, but it's certainly on the list of worst ideas.

The NRA isn't a federalist organization. It's a gun rights organization.

In any event, the same thing could be accomplished by state and/or local governments. There is no need for these officers to be federal officials. In fact, it's not crystal clear that Congress would have the power to appoint federal officials under the Lopez case.

ETA: congress probably could get around Lopez so long as it made legislative findings re: the impact of armed guards at schools on interstate commerce.

The NRA is a gun industry organization.

I teach high school, as does my wife. You are not going to get armed guards come January 2 and have them be effective. Where does the money come from? Since the NRA wants this so bad, why don't they donate a hefty sum each year to paying for it?

Other questions to be answered: Who is going to be chosen for these guards? How many are assigned to each school? Do they stand guard at every door or hallway? My school has at least 15 points of entry. The doors are locked during the day, but we know that only does so much. If we go the guard route, it will take time to create a plan of action for responding to these events. What prevents a student from sneaking the gun in and waiting til he/she gets in the classroom? Do we install metal detectors at every school?

I do know that our principals and county staff are reviewing all our lockdown drills; take that for what it is worth as I don't know what the end result will be. And I'm not saying it can't be done, but this is not as simple as the NRA wants it to be. So what is going to keep your kids safe? I don't have a good answer for you. All I know is as a teacher I will go back to school on the 2nd feeling just as safe as I did when we got out Thursday for break.

to the nra and the "proud gun owners" not infringing on the right to buy guns is more important than not infringing on the right to send your kid to school without them getting gunned down.

The NRA is a gun industry organization.

The United States of America is a gun industry organization. FIFY.

The idea of disarming this country or trying to keep guns out of the hands of bad guys is right up with the "war on drugs" or any of the countless other "wars on" we've attempted.

Might be as productive to ask "why is this type of person more and more prominent in my society"?

We need to figure out why we are producing so many fringe characters similar to Camus' Muersalt... No feeling, a meaningless existence dominated by pure Darwinian imagery. Some of these prople display less emotion and care than even my two cats who, I'm sure, are somewhere torturing some small creature this sunny morning.
