Official 2012-2013 MLB Hot Stove Thread

they just signed him from Cuba. He's their top prospect and a consensus top 100 prospect. here's his write up from BP:

1. Yasiel Puig
Position: OF
DOB: 12/07/1990
Height/Weight: 6’3’’ 215 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Drafted/Acquired: International free agent, 2012, Cuba
2012 Stats: .400/.500/1.000 at complex level AZL (9 games); .327/.407/.423 at High-A Rancho Cucamonga (14 games)
The Tools: 7 raw; 5+ arm; 5 run

What Happened in 2012: The Dodgers gave the Cuban slugger a seven-year, $42 million deal and the world joined hands and said, “Who is this guy and they gave him what?”

Strengths: Major-league strength; good athlete for size; mature build, with thick core and lower half; linebacker-like; power potential is carrying tool; could hit 25-plus HR at peak; arm is strong and will play in right; average run.

Weaknesses: Muscles balls; strength swing; leveraged and lengthy; hit tool projects to average at best; 5 run likely to be below average at major-league level; limited exposure at professional level.

Overall Future Potential: 6; first-division player

Explanation of Risk: High risk; physically mature, but more unknowns in game than knowns; hit tool has question marks.

Fantasy Future: Prototypical corner profile, with big power potential and enough bat to make it play.

The Year Ahead: Puig is ready for a full season at the Double-A level, which will no doubt pull the curtain back on Puig’s potential. He appears shorter than his listed height, and he’s built more like a football player than a baseball player, but he shows good athleticism and coordination in his movements. His raw strength is lumberjack, and his power is tied to that near-elite strength. His swing mechanics can leave him using more of his upper body, losing control of the stick in the zone. It remains to be seen if better pitching can trip him up, but sources speculate that the weaknesses of the hit tool could show up at the Double-A level. It’s difficult to rank a player like Puig, who could explode into one of the better power bats in the minors or underwhelm against better competition. At this stage, there are too many unknowns for a clear

Puig was the hottest international signing last year, he got $42 million - better hope he looks good.

Was a pretty big story.

I didn't see that or if I did I didn't remember it.

He sure didn't look like he was muscling his swing today. It looked really natural. It looks like he'll be fast 1st to 3rd.

Cubs missed out on - said they wouldn't go to the 7th year on him. They got Soler, though, but he is at least a year, if not two behind Puig.

I think Puig and Soler were the last two international signings before the international cap or whatever was instituted.

"The legend grew bigger than reality," Halladay said. "Anytime you do something different, a lot of attention gets put on it. I've always tried to work hard. I'm not trying to show anybody up or do something spectacular for attention. I want to get ready. Those things take on a life of their own."

Holy hell, Youk without facial hair is weeeeeird.

MinnesotaRoyal: 3 innings by Odorizzi/Montgomery: 8 hits, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 HR. Not there long enough to become true Rays, perhaps.

so i picked up r-ho in my keeper auction league and will be keeping him for $1. so i'll be rooting for everyone's favorite philly this year.

Angels seem to be trying to drive Mike Trout away from the team as soon as he can become a FA. First they moved him from CF to LF without any discussion. That didn't sit well.

Without talking with Trout or his agent they renewed his contract at $20,000 over the minimum for a player with his level of service. Yes, it's the team's right to do it. But this was cheap and classless and made worse with all the money they have thrown around over the past two off seasons.

I hope Trout lights it up this year and next and gets $20M in arbitration. Then as soon as he can leaves the team.

What do you want them to offer? It is a standard offer. He'll be a super 2 next year, so he'll get paid, and probably offered a long term deal which he'll accept.

They could have easily renewed him at 50-100% over minimum and not have blinked. It could have been an insurance policy for down there there is no downside.

$250,000 is .17 of 1% of their payroll.

Kind of agree with RJ. Just throw some cash at the kid so he doesn't feel like he's on the MLB minimum. That sounds ridiculous since athletes make a bunch of money anyway, but it's pennies to the organization and it'd likely put them in the good graces of their best player.

Not to Trout and his agent. They aren't happy at all. To them this is the second major insult of the off season.

Trout played LF a bunch last year, mostly I'd imagine when Peter Bourjos was playing, so this year shouldn't be that much different. I assume he'll play center whenever Trumbo or Vernon Wells are in the OF. I think he'll manage OK.

The contract stuff seems to be his agent kicking up dirt. I wonder if he's trying to use the publicity to gain leverage in negotiations.

There are no negotiations the team renewed him.

He's not happy at all.

This was really stupid management on both issues.

"You could easily put yourself in a bad mood about it, but that's not me," Trout said Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Times. "I like to play baseball. I'm going to try to win a World Series for the team and not worry about off-the-field things."

Trout's agent, Craig Landis, was less diplomatic about his client's deal.

"I asked only that the Angels compensate Mike fairly for his historic 2012 season, given his service time," Landis said in an email to the Times. "In my opinion, this contract falls well short of a 'fair' contract, and I have voiced this to the Angels throughout the process."

Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto defended the team's position.

"We love Mike -- he's a big part of what we're doing now and hopefully for many years to come," Dipoto told the Times. "But we're operating within the parameters of the collective bargaining agreement, and it's a system that rewards service time."

Yeah, this sounds like a real big screwup by the Angels. Definitely should be a major story.

Oh, wait. No it doesn't, and no it shouldn't.

There are no negotiations the team renewed him.

Unless he gets traded, Mike Trout and the Angels have a ton of negotiations left in their future.

Plus he could be trying for something extra this year. Maybe some additional compensation as a reward for winning ROY. Or he could be working towards a multi year contract that buys out some arbitration years.

Maybe they could have done more to generate goodwill, but the Angels have plenty of time to make it up to him.
