Moral Monday

"Those elected GOP leaders have largely ignored the protests, or derided those who come out to oppose their agenda as “outsiders” and “morons” even as arrest reports show nearly all are from within the state and list occupations that include clergy, doctors, lawyers and teachers."

Elections: Consequences. We have a revolution every twenty four months. The last one didn't go so well for this crowd. Probably b/c of the abysmal era of Easley-Perdue-Basnight-Nifong-Phipps-Black. It would be hard for an honest observer to rule that out, isn't it? If the Dems are unhappy, they certainly earned it. Ask a majority of the State.

If you catch me getting arrested and throwing a hissy fit during the next Presidential Press Conference, have at it. Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of taking 20% of the week off to go pout in the public square. #work #life #fun

Besides, I'm not counting on the contributions of other people to provide for my family. If the State cut back on giving out free stuff, I'm not sure I'd notice. I certainly wouldn't "solve" my problem by getting arrested throwing a fit in protest b/c other people aren't giving me free stuff fast enough.

Judging from the amount of time you spend knocking down strawmen on these boards, I'd say you have at least 20% of the workweek you could be using more productively.

I consider my responsibility in reminding you guys that nobody else believes the lies you repeatedly tell yourselves to be an important public service. You're welcome.

North Carolina politics is so frustrating. At one point, this state had a good infrastructure of high-quality universities and cities for highly-skilled workers, and a good infrastructure of community college and industries for low-skilled workers. In the early 1990's, the federal government decided to decimate tobacco, while globalization decimated furniture. The Democrat's solution was to help lawyers, college professors, and scientists in the Triangle. Now, instead of focusing on cutting regulations or taxes, the Republicans are focused on abortion clinics and schools. Who the hell do we have to vote for to bring a good, stable industry into this state?

Here is a pretty article showing the situation in Thomasville, N.C., which is just up the road from Winston-Salem. I think that it is something to keep in mind when considering the mess that is going on in Raleigh.

A legend in his own mind.

I'm not sure how the furniture businesses has gone over the last 20 years. Anecdotally, I talked to some guys who work at the local wood furniture store and they're taking a beating from Ikea and the like. I can't imagine the housing downturn has been good for them. Tobacco has declined.

Meanwhile, higher education continues to grow, STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) is hot right now, and lawyers are still like roaches. Seems like the Dems picked winners. Higher education, science, and law are good, stable industries.

You didn't do well in history either, it seems.

The Democratic Party was formed in 1792...It adopted its present name during the Presidency of Andrew Jackson in the 1830s. In the 1840s and '50s, the party was in conflict over extending slavery to the Western territories. Southern Democrats insisted on protecting slavery in all the territories while many Northern Democrats resisted. The party split over the slavery issue in 1860 at its Presidential convention in Charleston, South Carolina.
Northern Democrats nominated Stephen Douglas as their candidate, and Southern Democrats adopted a pro-slavery platform and nominated John C. Breckinridge in an election campaign that would be won by Abraham Lincoln and the newly formed Republican Party. After the Civil War, most white Southerners opposed Radical Reconstruction and the Republican Party's support of black civil and political rights. Jackson

The Democratic Party identified itself as the "white man's party" and demonized the Republican Party as being "Negro dominated," even though whites were in control. Determined to re-capture the South, Southern Democrats "redeemed" state after state -- sometimes peacefully, other times by fraud and violence. By 1877, when Reconstruction was officially over, the Democratic Party controlled every Southern state.

Prediction: next century's Democrats will be pretending to have opposed abortion. The beat goes on...

jhmd calling someone out on history hahah

"One unemployed man named Lee Creighton took the mic and explained the plight of the unemployed in North Carolina. Next week, 70,000 North Carolinians will lose federal extended unemployment benefits because of a new state law that reduces the maximum benefit an individual can receive. North Carolina is the only state to reject these federal benefits, which come at no cost to the state."

EXTENDED benefits. unemployment/welfare is supposed to be a way to bridge the gap, not a way of life.

these protestors have every right to express their free speech, but they also must remember that these elected officials are voted in. if we continue to extend these unemployment benefits, what is pushing people to get jobs?

What jobs?

jhmd calling someone out on history hahah

Let's not let the fact that each and every portion of the linked article is historical fact get in the way of your autoerotic factual asphyxiation.

What jobs?

The ones people get when the government doesn't pay their bills. The ones that people traverse central America to come to this country to do. Next time you drive by a construction site, look around. Those jobs. Next time you're at a stoplight behind a first generation business owner, in a very used van with ladder strapped to the top and tired men inside who have just worked very hard doing jobs others have the choice not to do (which will of course lead to upward mobility, entrepreneurial ownership (a proven wealth creator) and opportunity. You know, those jobs.

So if we just stop giving them money, they will create their own jobs on construction sites with ladders and old vans and be tired men and then they'll own a company and stuff. its so damn simple, you know?

What country are these people in? Because the government "pays their bills" in America.

Since when is entrepreneurial ownership a "proven wealth creator". Plenty of small businesses fail every year.

I thought the objection to immigrants was that they come and live off the dole and take services without paying taxes. help me out here oh wise conservatives.....

those are the bad immigrants, not the good immigrants. we need to throw them all out though, because they're all brown and it's too hard to tell the difference between the good ones and the bad ones. try to keep up.
