Grobe needs 3 wins to avoid being the only coach with 5 straight losing seasons

Next year's schedule is brutal, with the cupboard this bare 2 wins will be tough

Home: Army, BC, Clemson, Syracuse, VT, + FCS cupcake?
Away: ULM, ND, Duke, FSU, Louisville, NCST
 
As of now, that cupcake is an 11-0 N. Illinois Huskies.

So if Wake beats Vandy, Grobe sets the win record for Wake. If he retires, you have to figure Lobo gets the nod as head coach. That would be what I'd consider a doomsday scenario.

Think you have to root for Grobe to decide he's in for 3 more years - enough time to make it through a rebuilding year or two before being competitive. But to do so hopefully they'll gut the coaching staff with a big focus on recruiting.

Buyouts are rarely for the full amount of the contract.

TV job? As the world's most boring host? He's got more money than he can spend and seems to enjoy a quiet life with his wife. No way he ends up traveling around for TV.

Three years left on I believe a 10 year deal...IMO, bad business decision to offer a 10 year deal without an escape clause for sub par performance. This all falls in Wellman's lap...

How do you expect the staff who got us in this mess to rebuild our program? Nothing gets better until Wellman is gone. Start over.
 
Gut feeling is that Grobe retires after the game against Vandy...record or no record. My only fear is that he will strongly encourage Wellman to take care of his staff by naming Lobo our new HC. Maybe Lobo will make a better HC than OC, but I really don't want us to have to find out. If Grobe goes, I would prefer that we bring in a whole new staff. Just don't see Wellman having the stones to do that.

- I'd be really, really surprised. It was also would force a referendum on wellman so really it's everyone's best interest to keep their heads in the sand. Wellman gets paid. Grobo gets paid. Bz keeps getting paid. Good times.
- he's got to know we're going to be dogshit next year. On the odd chance he does retire setting Lobo up to be HC would be about the worst thing he could do to him

That is actually a really good point that I hadn't really thought about. One reason I think Grobe may go ahead and retire is that he knows that next year will, in all likelihood, be another losing season. I think that he feels the "heat" more than he is showing. But you are right, setting up Lobo as a HC with next year's team might be a bit cruel.
 
I'm ok with hiring lobo as interim for a year. Nothing matters until wellman is gone. Might as well keep grobe since we will be paying him anyway. No sense in wasting any more money on football.
 
I doubt Lobo would see being named the head coach at Wake Forest as "cruel."

Best possible scenario for him. Not to mention the leash new coaches get at Wake has to be among the longest at any program in the country.

Well, true, but Lobo's leash is a bit shorter than what most new hires would have, I would think. I don't know, regardless, I can't imagine that hire going over well at all. Wellman has to know he needs to hit a homerun with his next hire, if he stays employed long enough to make one. Of course, I don't know what is logical in Wake circles anymore.
 
It is so crazy to think that Wake fans are so beaten down and tortured that we casually speak about Lobo becoming the next head coach of WF football as if it is inevitable, despite the fact that he is a complete and utter failure as a coach and the fact that he still collects a paycheck from WF is a travesty. It is literally bizzaro world. Be so bad at your job that not only are you not fired, but shit we might promote you. I have had enough of Grobe and Lobo and Wake football. I have had enough of old geezers enabling this bullshit. I don't care if Grobe is a nice guy. Pretty much everything about Lobo pisses me off at this point. The greatest Christmas gift would be all these hacks getting canned.
 
Wellman getting fired as Wake's AD is a pipe dream. And he doesn't seem to be much for interim tags.

Would love it if Wellman started quietly making calls to get Lobo a head coaching job somewhere at a lesser program. I don't see Grobe firing him.
 
No one other than Wake would seriously consider Lobo as a head coach. He was a bad position coach and coordinator and would be a failure as HC too.
 
The combined salaries of these 3 (wellman, grobe, bzz) is criminal for the results they are putting out.
