Vanderbutthurt

The article was trash. It purported to assert that Franklin's exit was poorly executed, but it was apparent from the actual whining of the author that nothing short of staying at Vandy could have excused Franklin. I wonder, how do you expect a coach to leave after [only] three years? What did Clawson do with BGSU, for example? You don't go around telling Vandy people you're leaving until you have a done deal; that's how it is with any job move. Franklin's exit was no different from any other coach looking for a new gig. No, Vandy, you aren't a special snowflake.

The soreness of the fans is to be expected.

My thinking is Franklin's going back to Vandy and actively recruiting kids who had committed to the Dores is heaping scorn upon a good run he had there.

Clawson explicitly said he'd not actively pursue kids already headed for BGSU.

I don't know if it is "clean sock" issue but most fans greet the practice with ill will.

I doubt anybody else would let him get to 4 seasons so you're right.

I understand Vandy fans' disappointment, but this could be seen coming from miles away. All you can do is offer a big contract for him to stay, and if he's not interested you have to let him go and move on. Wake was "lucky" with Grobe, as Grobe was overly concerned with keeping all his ACs intact and didn't have a huge ego. In hindsight, of course, it wouldn't have been bad if Grobe had gone to Arkansas (would he have left Lobo to lead our program? <shudder>). The best attitude for programs like Wake and Vandy is to look for superlative coaches, and if they get hired away due to success view that as a good thing and go out and find another great coach. Keep that up until you find a great coach who's interested in staying for whatever reason. Easy to say since it isn't our great coach leaving, but the Grobe experience has wizened me to the pitfalls of getting what you were hoping for.

Why would you want a coach who doesn't want to be there anymore and you can't afford to keep? I get the recruiting angle, but it's far more likely that recruits would choose between Vandy and Penn than Vandy and Penn State. If a recruit isn't interested in what Vandy has to offer academically and only committed because of Franklin or his position coach, he probably wouldn't have been a good fit anyway.

I think the Van Der Beek crying gif is definitely applicable here.

I haven't followed it closely. I am a little surprised that he'd leave Vanderbilt and the SEC for Penn State. I'm a little more surprised that the money would be that much better at Penn State for him to leave Vanderbilt and the SEC to go to Penn State, as I would think Vanderbilt would certainly pony up a lot of money if not as much as Penn State. Once you get into multi-millions, I would not think that one more million or so would be enough to get you to leave some place you like where you have built a successful base that you are just now starting to exploit, in the SEC, to go to Penn State, although I certainly could be wrong.

I don't think we have the whole story yet.

He can win a national title at penn state. Never going to happen at vandy.

Yeah he's only got something like 4 wins over teams that are .500 or better.

PSU fills a 100,000 seat stadium every Saturday, even when they suck. In the SEC, Vandy will always be fourth fidde (at best) in their own division, let alone conference. He can do special things at Penn State.

if only he could've gotten to an orange bowl at Vandy; could've parlayed that into a lucrative half decade of mailing it in

This. The program at Penn State has obviously taken some pretty serious hits, but it still has the potential to be one of the top jobs in the country.

He also grew up in Pennsylvania, played college football in Pennsylvania, and the very aspect that appeared to drive O'Brien from PSU might be the one thing Franklin is best at: adopting the public persona as 'face' of the program (if not the school) and attending to all of the requisite fundraising, glad-handing, and media-related engagements.

And while Vandy is a much better job now than when Franklin took it initially, he'd still always be fighting uphill with respect to recruiting and academic restrictions--a limitation that will only be exacerbated when and if Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia pull their collective head out of their ass.

his dream job has always been Penn State. He went to Neshaminy, Penn state football camps, grew up a fan, etc. etc.... If it is your dream job, and you are going to start recruiting kids with the pitch "you are going to be a part of bowl eligible teams help get the program back on its feet..." Plus, they have a very young QB, with excellent potential, and decent recruiting classes coming in. Again, if this is your 'dream job', as he said it is, then it's a great situation, plus he's getting paid.

Unless Vandy makes a hire in the next couple of days, they are going to suffer massive attrition from their current committed class. The football recruiting dead period ends on Wednesday, and it will be balls out recruiting for the next 3 weeks until signing day. Having Gattis (the Vandy recruiting coordinator under Franklin) leave for PSU is another blow. The timing of this could not be worse for Vandy.
