Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

Some people are crazy with their "home run or GTFO" posts. However, the realistic candidates from that thread have decided they don't want to take our job. We are at a level below those guys.

This is based on pure speculation.

POSITIVITY

i would be a great way to announce a home run hire. if there is one waiting in the wings ready to swoop in.

the problem is he would need to reach out to his current school and players and let them know. no way that would not leak. unless is howland...

The event is tomorrow.

Call a team meeting tomorrow AM. Let your bosses know.

Well we did briefly...but it also goes to the fact that we shouldn't have waited so long to fire [Redacted].

I agree Williams wasn't a good fit here, but I just can't believe Williams was a "good" fit at Virginia Tech either.

Why not? He gets to go from the dying Big East to the ACC, keep a very healthy salary, doesn't have to be the face of the university (apparently something he was looking for), and has no recruiting restrictions (also big, especially considering what went down w/ the AD at Marquette).

Howland did a pretty good job recruiting at UCLA. Of course, it's also UCLA.

I look at Howland's results at PIttsburgh more so than UCLA given UCLA is easy to win at if you're not incompetent.

The biggest problem is Wellman has said he doesn't measure success by wins and losses, which tells you all you need to know about where his mindset is.

I think Marshall would come if we threw loads of money, but it doesn't even sound like we have contacted him regarding the vacancy.

And yes, the fan base is in such disarray thanks to the last four years that most of us need a reality check. Things aren't good. This program isn't very attractive at the moment. We can thank our AD for all of this. Comparing us to Buzz to VT may not even be fair because that could've been a fluke. No one knows how that went down.

Of course. I've always said that even though the buck stops with Wellman, he needs handlers. People to tell him it's a bad idea to use patronizing phrases like "heavens yes" and "historically competitive."

You get defined by the few sound bytes you make these days, right or wrong. So if information control is going to be your modus operandi, be better at talking when you do open your mouth.

All this being said, we sure are reading a lot into very little information. It's not to be expected, but I see people like Apetit who have been really smart and thoughtful for months turning into lunatics and I have a hard time blaming Wellman.

"Home run hire."

The minute someone at the AD uttered those words to a reporter, or uttered them a big-mouthed booster who would utter them to a reporter, this was inevitable.

Hopefully Hatch retires before Wellman. If Wellman is involved in hiring his successor, look out.

yup

I wish the Buzz Williams stuff would go away.

1) He recruited a fair number of junior college players to Marquette, including several upon which he relied heavily (Darius Johnson-Odom, for one). Not only would he not have been able to do that here, but he likely would've had additional academic-recruiting restrictions not in place at VT.

2) He was quoted publicly as saying he was "tired" or "fed up" with being "the face" of Marquette (paraphrased). No one is more the face of Wake Forest than the head coach of the men's basketball team, unlike at VT where football is king and will likely stay that way.

3) He had prior run-ins with Marquette's athletic director with respect to his control and/or management of the program.

4) VT gave him a 7-year deal, for a lot of money. I personally have no idea what the buy-out figures are, or what other expenses VT ponied up for to lure him to Blacksburg.

5) Buzz was hired nearly immediately after Johnson was fired, and with little to no reporting of any 'discussions' and 'negotiations' between Buzz and VT prior thereto. This leads me to believe there was substantial mutual interest between the parties long before the job "officially" came open.

So if Ron Wellman is so concerned about messaging and controlling the story and not allowing leaks during a coaching search, how come he wasn't more concerned about Bzzaster running his stupid mouth in a USA Today article after he was shit-canned?

I thought we would impose some stipulations if we "allowed him to resign." I'm certainly a bit concerned when it comes to Wellman's judgment at this point, but who's to say he isn't just rubber-stamping the work of one Mike Buddie at this point?

So many questions, so much speculation and not enough scoopulation!! I'm ready for this to be over.

I don't follow this logic, mainly because it implies we're just setting aside some super BIG NAME who would fix everything if only Wellman gave him money. Who is that, exactly? We can't make Shaka, Marshall, or Miller to take the job, and I highly doubt we didn't gauge each of them. If we're discussing Howland, I'm baffled. Howland has every chance of being a disaster in his next stop. He was basically run out of the state of California for being a bastard. He's never been described as an ace recruiter, and he's never worked this region. Several decent open jobs besides ours passed on him. He's far, far from some BIG NAME NO RISK hire.

If this board can't get behind a guy like Manning if he gets the job, before even seeing what he can do, then we're in a lot worse shape as a fan base than I thought. Thanks, Wellman. Thanks, Obama.

I imagine this is false. Marshall and Miller were/are likely available for the right price. I'm afraid Wellman and his merry band of enablers do not realize the position they have put Wake in. Their ineptitude has made us the Charlotte Bobcats of the coaching carousel. Charlotte either has to luck out in the draft or severely overpay B-list stars (Al Jefferson) in order to be remotely relevant. Wake either has to luck out (Shaka, Marshall, Wright) or severely overpay B-list coaches (Miller, Mack, White). It seems like Wellman might not be willing to do that.

The one that really hurts and will sick with me for a long time is Mike White. I can rationalize every other candidate turning us down (even Manning, if he does, to some extent with a young team and moving up conferences to AAC).

Assuming the rumors are true, I have no idea how we were not able to land Mike White given his circumstances.

intimidated

Ron Wellman is a PR disaster. Wake's media relations and PR department are horrible at reigning him in. They're also just generally pretty bad at their jobs at large. They need to enter the 21st century.

I've heard a similar story from a bunch of people; my hope is that their source is the same and it's BS, although hard to believe because it jibes well with everything that's been publicly available. Anyway, White (undoubtedly influenced by his father) apparently wants more experience at his first job before he jumps to the next level, so he took himself out of consideration early in the process with Wake. Also explains how he went from USF's main target one day to "not in consideration" the next.

He's got a lot of returning talent so I imagine it won't be hard for him to get a high level gig after next season if he chooses to pursue one at that time. But yeah, MEGA BUMMER.

Hopefully everything I've just typed is all bullshit.

Dude just called out an entire state!

Certainly the most sobering reality if that is the case. We obviously don't make it any easier on ourselves with our higher academic standards, smaller student body, culture crazies in the BoT, limits on exceptions and hyper-emphasis on APR and such.
