Video Game Thread - The Last of Us = GOTY

I think the system will continue to be developed with Kinect as the base model, though. At least, I would hope so. I think the no-Kinect option will just be marketed as a XBOne lite, sort of like the 3DS and the 2DS. I hope game developers will see it that way.

I'd probably play more MOBA games if the communities weren't just abhorrent. DoTA's is bad, LoL's is somehow even worse. It's just beyond toxic and makes the games completely unenjoyable. Youtube comment sections are embarrassed by what you see on a regular basis in both of the big time MOBA's.

Eh. If you're new and you say as much, people are cool. If you ask for help, you'll get it. It's the people who are arrogant, ignore advice, and feed that get flamed. And people who play on the wrong servers, like the fucking Russians on US East (or, just as bad, the fucks who only speak Spanish, well after it's been established that everyone else speaks English)

So, the prize pool for Dota 2's International 4 just topped $6MM, and Valve has announced new stretch goals for various checkpoints on the way to $10MM.

They're making an absolute ton of money with this thing.

got my usual SUPER CUT cause I was getting SHAGGY and while waiting there's a BEST BUY next door and apparently they got my JAM for MARIO KART 8 on a weekend where my WOMAN is away COMPETITIVE EXERCISING. 12 year old ASIAN kids BEWARE cause PALMA is logging onto my MIIVERSE and gonna school ALL OF YOPU

damn, there's a mario kart 8 already? shows how far out of touch with Nintendo i am.

Just started Hearthstone today. I've never played WoW, so all of the characters are new to me. Great game so far, and REALLY great for it being free.

I've been poking around with that a bit as well, and my last Blizzard game was either Starcraft or Diablo II, whichever came out later. Doesn't really matter, as the game isn't about the story. I agree that it is well done, if a bit simple. I will say that it does a poor job of explaining some of the more unusual card functions. Still, I've gotten three of the characters all the way through the training levels and given the arena a couple shots. Never planning on putting money into it, but its a fun time waster.

I've been hooked on it for about a month. It's quick (10 min per game, max), easy to learn/hard to master, and free. You will need to sink in a little cash if you want to open up some of the better cards, though.

I picked up Reaper of Souls yesterday. Pretty pumped to get back into Diablo. Everything I read about RoS suggests that Adventure Mode + Waypoints basically makes it Diablo 2 2, which is exactly what I wanted all along.

Dota 2's prize pool for The International 4 has reached $4MM, already nearing double the next highest eSports tournament pool (The International 2013, at $2.8MM). That is an insane amount of money, and it makes me wish that I didn't suck at videogames (relatively speaking).

I was going to post about that considering the recent discussion..

So Valve sells compendiums to raise the prize pool, and they get 7.50 out of every 10 dollars, while the other 2.50 goes directly to the prize pool. That means Valve has made at least 5 million or so already I think from this tournament, based off compendium sales alone (I think the original prize pool was just 1.6 million).. super rough math (from memory, I didn't write it down when I was actually doing the calculations a few days ago).

That's just insane though.

Weekly International prize pool update: Up to $8.5MM now, nearing 4 times the next biggest eSports prize pool. Valve has made over $25MM from Compendium sales alone.

I think this is definitely headed for the $10MM mark at this point.

Have you played Path of Exile? Diablo's not my bag, but I've played PoE and I've heard it's similar.

I don't think I've ever heard of Path of Exile.

Have you never played a Diablo game, or have you tried and disliked one? I wasn't a fan of D3, but D2 (and, more so, D2:LoD) is probably my favorite game of all time.

RoS was cool and all but it held my attention for about 3 weeks. I wish they would have started off with this patch instead of the hot garbage that was launch DIII. I played the launch version for a long time and made a bunch of money but burned out on it.

Any specific reason as to why? I still haven't gotten around to actually playing it, so I'm interested to hear where it goes wrong in terms of replayability.

The changed loot system keeps you in it for awhile but it eventually slows down again to pre-patch levels. No fun running for hours and never getting an upgrade. And really it is still the same game under the surface.

I've never played Diablo, but grinding for loot and XP isn't my thing. All the previous games that revolve around that progression scale -- WoW, Borderlands -- I've tired of almost instantly.

Am I incorrect in attributing Diablo as one of these?

It's much, much closer to Borderlands than to WoW, but it (and I'm talking about D2 here) plays more like a hack 'n slash RPG, like a Baldur's Gate type thing. The gameplay itself was pretty simplistic, and grinding for loot was always the big draw. I really like D2's trading system and runewords, its semi-randomized maps, and its small (up to 8 players) massively multiplayer component. I think, looking back, Battle.net in that D2 era sort of set a gold standard for online lobbies and multiplayer interfaces.

Okay. Yeah. I've got nothing against those types of games -- they just don't interest me like a good 'ole adventure game in the vein of Monkey Island, Torin's Passage, Grim Fandango, Myst - to name a few.

I'm actually surprised -- when I think about it -- that I'm so into the MOBA gameplay of LoL. Must be the competitive aspect.
