Official OGBoards Golf Thread

Been trying to get more consistent on my putting. I have a stroke saver grip, and have been messing around with a few different putting grips with my hands.

I've always done a traditional right hand low (as a righty). Any tips/advice? Left hand low feels really weird, but I have better speed. What does everybody else use?

I'm traditional with my putting but am told by a lot of my friends that the Super Stroke is a game changer. I putt poorly because I'm a bad putter, not because of my club/grip.

Anyone play with Taylormade irons?

Got some pro-shop credit at Forsyth CC and my irons are 10 years old and starting to lose the grooves.

Hit the Speedblades and the Muscle Cavities at a recent Demo day and hit the shit out of the speed blades, but then saw the lofts are all cranked up so they can say MOAR DISTANCE!!!one!!!eleven!!

Don't need anymore distance, but not sure I see the drawbacks of taking the extra yardage if they're the same accuracy. (MC 7-iron goes 185, speedblade 7-iron goes 200)

Reason I ask, is because I don't want to retool my wedges a whole lot. Current set-up is 48 degree PW, 52, 56, 60

I played Holly Ridge in beautiful Sophia, NC yesterday. Course is a real gem out in the country between Archdale and Ashboro. Pretty layout in very good condition with Champion Bermuda (or some similar hybrid bermuda) greens. Fast, firm, and in very good shape. And a nice bar/grill in the clubhouse that draws non-golfers.

Anyone else played there?

Moved to left hand low to help with shorter putts. I actually think speed control is better with right hand low. For me at least.

I bought the speedblades about 6 months ago and it's the best decision I've ever made. Gained about a club and a half on my irons and still hit it straight as ever (I can't work a fade with them very well but that's the least of my worries as a 7 handicap or so). I love mine. probably won't have to retool too much as the A-wedge is 50 degrees.

There’s a golfer out there named Dennis and he’s a dick.

We played last weekend at Twisted Dunes in AC and it was a very nice course, worth the $100 a head. Sand traps were pebbly/rocky but greens and fairways were great.

Only 3 from our group went so they paired us up with a guy named Dennis. We all agreed to play Lone Wolf for $1 a point with handicaps. I shot a little worse than my handicap but cleaned up points by winning 16 of the 18 holes for +$84. Lot of carryovers on the front 9. Other two guys were pretty middle and Dennis was down $60. We finish the round, shake hands, and after driving our carts back, he tells us he’ll meet us in the clubhouse.

We head to the club house and never saw him again. He just straight up bailed.

Sounds like a real menace.

For short putts left hand low is really good and helping you keep the clubface sqaure to the target line. I tried it and was money from <5ft but I didn't make near as many 10-15 ft putts because (like you) my speed was dog shit. Never had any feel at all. 30+ ft lag putts were a joke.

Played Laurel Springs north of Atlanta yesterday. I have to admit, I like Jack Nicklaus courses. I especially like the one or two short par fours he always builds. And I like the fact that there will be holes where you can see the flag but not the green surface. Fun track.

When I was 14 or 15 I went out to my neighborhood muni because I wanted to make a final decision to switch to left-hand-low or stick to conventional. I'd been switching back and forth for maybe a year prior to that. I spent around 4 hours, 2 hours with each method, to a set of maybe 15 different putts. Even though it still felt less comfortable to putt cross-handed, the number was lower so I made the switch permanent.

It doesn't take that long for distance control to feel just as natural as a conventional grip. The first time I tried it I liked how it kept the shoulders level and took the hands a bit more out of the stroke. Threw on a super stroke Flatso grip at the beginning of this year and have never putted better in my life.

Played the Clemson University course this past weekend. It is a really good track. There is some elevation change, some water along the lakeside and some interesting holes. It was in very good shape as well. We played it all the way back so it was around 6900 yds - long enough to be interesting but not too long.

New Nike irons coming out in October.

At minimum, they pass the "looks" test:

Looks like sleepy and Matt are playing in the member guest this year at Maple Chase. I will be playing with my dad so maybe we will see each other in the same flight!

In playing with LK. Have to make sure to meet you. We're hoping for the second flight

Not sure where we will be. I'm at a 5.2 and my dad is 15.2 (for handicap intents for this tournament).

Guessing third or fourth?

I'm an 8 and I think he's scratch. Last year I was 10 and him scratch and we played second flight. You guys will probably be third

Is that what they're converting Pinehurst #2 to as we speak?

It all depends on how much water the super uses on the course. Go play River Landing in Wallace (which was one of the first courses to switch to champ bermuda) and you can still leave big ball marks and it even feels a bit spongy. Most golfers like it hard and fast though, so most courses are going that route because it's cheaper to water less.
