how could bz have done worse? that's a serious question. name one thing that could have been worse this past season... 0-16 in the acc? that's about it.
I think our record would have been better under Dino. But I think Nikita wouldn't have played at all, Carson wouldn't have started a single game, Chennault wouldn't have played as much, and Terrell would have averaged 20 shots a game and not developed at all. McKie would have taken 3 times as many 3's.
We're in better shape because Channault played, because Nikita went from walking disaster to serviceable by the end of the year, McKie worked hard on his inside game, and Carson struggled but played a ton of significant minutes as a freshman.
I think it pays off a little next year, but a lot over years 3 and 4. I think Dino coached some solid defense, and I think he threw as much talent on the court at all times as possible. But when things didn't work or guys got burned out or one of our stars went cold, there were no adjustments, there was no plan B, no guys on the bench who got minutes early in the year and put it together like UNC did. The few times we were in games late last year, we executed well, threw together some nice plays, and [Redacted] looked in his element. He looked exactly the opposite of how he looks during a presser, for example.
If it doesn't pan out in years 3-4, we fire the guy and go back to the drawing board. I'd give it maybe 50/50 at this point. Who knows. My bar for [Redacted] remains the same as it was on day 1. Some kind of postseason or near miss in year 3, NCAA in year 4. Time will tell.
