Season long PGA tour thread--the presidents cup from south korea

I really don't understand why we have to have a former major champion (preferably PGA Champion) as a captain. On what grounds does that demonstrate leadership, organization and inspiration? Further, I don't even think we have to have a former player as a captain. If the PGA of America really wanted to be creative they would find someone with exceptional leadership skills and executive experience.

Bringing back DL3 is like the NFL teams that keep hiring Norv Turner, Wade Phillips, Dave Wannstedt etc etc.
Agree that it shouldn't have to be a former major champ but would think it would need to be someone who has played championship level golf and already knows the players, vs an outside executive of some sort.

Just noticed that Bill Haas is in the featured group at Riviera for the first two rounds, going out at noon today (PST) with DJ and Bubba. That should be interesting. I guess Bill is pretty much the chaperone in that group.

Webb and Kyle are also in the field this week. Kyle could use a top-ten finish to improve his chances of continuing to play in the more popular events.

Wow, impressive to see the young am Zalatoris getting to play at the Riv. Also, great to see 4 Deacs in the field. Certainly know my rooting interest heading into the weekend along with Jimmy Walker.

Go Deacs!!

ETA that I think this is the year Billy makes some serious noise in the majors. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he'll be in the hunt for the Claret Jug at St. Andrews come Sunday. And he may not make it to Saturday this week as he and his wife are expecting any minute! Congrats!

Live@ coverage is on #10, which might be the best short par 4 in the world.

Just missed the green from inside 100 and is in a bunker.

ETA: Probably 12 feet or so to stay at +1.

Holy shit I want to murder this guy on the dirt path. Call for a rules official for a simple drop. discuss. put down the tee. Measure. Switch clubs. Practice swings - 20. Then he decides not to even drop the fucking ball, then practices for another 30 swings. Thankfully he missed the green although he had to drop again due to a sprinkler head. Luckily didn't call the rules official back.

Ridiculous.

Carlos Sainz Jr I hate you.

Zalatoris by contrast took like 8 seconds to play a buried bunker shot. Now they'll get put on the clock...

Yeah he does. He also had 7 minutes to stand over the shot, look at it from any angle possible, and then go get a milkshake before having to play since Carlos took decades.

What's the best way to play that thing? That green is on such a tough angle. I'd think a long iron up the left side for a short wedge in.

I've always thought a wedge in your hand is the best way (never played the course before, just based on years of tv watching and following golf).

Zalatoris on 11 in two with a lengthy eagle putt.

Three jacks for par and is at -2.499 strokes gained putting so far...well below the tour average which makes sense though given that it's his first PGA Tour event.

Northern Trust angling for the title Fountain of Youth Classic sponsored by Nutronics' Deer Antler Spray: Vi-jizzle is a'sizzle and Retief musta been struck by lightning again as he is tied with Singh at -5 for the early lead. Crazy game.

I think heading back into the clubhouse for a couple cold frosty ones is the safest bet.

Shouldn't he be in Barcelona testing with Toro Rosso?

He shot 76. Very respectable on a hard golf course.
