Dan's take on Wake

We don't have any shooters coming in next year unless a scholarship frees up and we can get somebody at the last second. I'm hoping that Crawford can come in and become a drive and dish guy to get our guys some open shots. I think his outside shooting ability is right up there with CMM's, though honestly it has to be somewhat better because CMM is the worst shooting PG I've ever seen outside of TJ Ford. Three guys DM brought in this year can shoot the rock, but none can really create that I've seen. We need a guy who can distract and distribute.

Many scholarships will find there way to be open over the next few months I would imagine. Daniel Green, Andre Washington, Rondale Watson, Aaron Rountree could or will open up and of course Darius Leonard moves on. But we need to be signing somebody of worth and not just signing people to have numbers like Carl Tacy did his last year with us and Jeff Bzdelic did numerous times. We have 3 really good players already signed for next year we can build on. Top 100 types. We do not want to take lesser players just to fill gaps.

I heard that UVA has the 3rd best scoring defense of all time behind two Princeton teams. I don't think you can draw major conclusions about our players from this game (Dinos, Hudson etc..). They've been locking down just about everybody. If not for a flurry of very long 3's at the end of the Duke game, the Cavs would be undefeated.

Yeah, but they didn't lock down our same guys about 2 weeks ago. I don't know if that says more positive about about their team or negative about ours.

As others have said, if we're not hitting threes, it's over. Over half of the attempts and made baskets at UVa were from deep. And we shot 22 FTs.

Our scoring was terrible, but so was our reaction to their offense. They passed and weaved the ball around until someone (we) always lost his man giving them a lap-up or wide open three, time after time. Do something different, other than just substitute, play several available zones, or something. Give them a different look, often, couldn't have been worse. We looked as helpless as I can remember.

The only reason they didn't lock us down the first time was Dinos was on fire and at 6-10, he can get his shot off. Virginia has one of the best defenses ever. They just do. But they will give you some looks outside, although they can run out on you pretty well, but they lock up the paint, and they don't give up many OR's. If you are having a cold shooting night from outside, it is going to get ugly. And it did. That is the pack line D. Make you shoot over them with contested shots, and give up nothing inside. Shit is working awfully well this year for them.

Yeah, I'm not advocating just filling in the gaps, but I'd like to think we can find a post-graduate transfer with a reliable stroke from outside.

Had an up-close view of this game and it was striking how in virtually every 1:1 matchup, UVa was bigger, faster and stronger.

Amazing what Bennett has done for that program.

Come on guys we really need to look at the humor in the situation. Like when their point guard threw the bucket of confetti on the spectators, or when they started to do the weave against our defense and the guy with the ball walked out while we defended the guys without the ball and continue doing the weave.

When did we change our name to the generals by the way?

Who says Crawford shoots as badly as CMM?

I agree with this 100%. We have the athletic wings to play an effective 1-3-1 trap and we should play some to 2-3 zone just to change things up once in a while

As awful as that game was, it was not close to the lowest point total scored by a UVA opponent:

Rutgers - 26
Harvard - 27
GT - 28

They are the number 1 defensive team in the nation, and hold teams to a ridiculous 38% on 2 pt FGs (yes, 38% from the field, excluding 3s). Almost impossible to score on UVA inside. Mitoglou is 6-10 and has a quick release; so, if he is hitting his outside shots, no defense can stop that (BTW, Hudson also went 3-5 from 3 in game #1 versus UVA). WF could not hit the 3 early, and UVA does not let teams score inside; so, game over.

BTW, 3 point shooting should improve next year. WF top 3 3 point shooters both in volume and percentage (Mitoglou 38% - 45-116; Wilbekin 37% 41-111; Hudson 32% 41-128) are all frosh, and will improve from the behind the arc. Sucks to lose like that, but when UVA shoots better than 50% field; they will dominate any team that they play.

Amazing what Bennett has done for that program.

What's really amazing is that he's doing it mostly with 3*s. A couple of early 4*s didn't pan out and transferred. Of the current group, only Brogdon, Anderson and I think Tobey are 4*s (Perrantes I think was a high 3*). Harris and Mitchell were 3*s too. Part of his success is due to luck with some lesser knowns outplaying their recruiting ranking. But the other part of it is how well his teams play the packline. He went to the Dance twice in 3 years at WSU, in the high basketball desert where they never got good recruits. And he had a bunch of less athletic kids winning games in the 40s. Now he has an athletic bunch playing it to perfection, and that's why they're the 2nd best team in the country. Their offense is pretty solid - they work it to get mostly decent shots (though Brogdon is really their only really strong offensive player), and they rarely turn it over. But this group wouldn't be #2 without suffocating teams like they do.

Last week, the Cavs were 1 pt. better than the Deacs. Last night, before the game, we thought the #2 team in the nation was still 1 pt. better, and all we had to do was the same thing to get the same result. UVa made other plans. Lesson learned, I hope.

Huge Bennett fan. He has been fortunate that Brogdon and Harris turned out to be future NBA players, when no one forecast that. With that said, he has taken that good fortune, and shaped it into a top 5 team in consecutive years. There are a lot of programs with better talent that can't do that.

Will be interesting to see if Bennett is able to use this success to raise UVA's recruiting profile (and to the extent Bennett wants to recruit top 25 guys), as he will not always land recruits that massively outperform their recruiting rankings.

Amazing that you either can read the minds of twelve college students or have locker room access that's unmatched on this board.
What a simplistic, simplistic rationalization.

To what must be one shitty question.

That was funny. I needed a laugh with the way my day was going.

On another note, I really want to see Kentucky vs. Virginia in the finals. What an f'ing game. Great offense and one-and-done's who win on talent vs. Great defense and a great system.

And dkin is right, UVa's system under Bennett is strong D, and to play strong D, you have to be quick, strong and athletic. And they identify those guys, and have enough offense to carry the day. I am completely shocked that they have been able to continue to win without Anderson, and the last 2 games, without Perrantes. Really? They have got a bench full of big, fast, strong athletes. Pitching and defense wins championships they say. If you have ever played bball and been guarded by a guy who is bigger, stronger and faster than you, and who cares about the outcome, you well know there isn't a lot you can do. Their defense is sick. If you are hot from outside, you have a chance, as you do with anyone. But that is all they are going to give you. If you are cold, well, scoring 30 is a challenge.

Well, Wilkins and Shayock were high 3*s for this class, and he has a high 3* big coming in to replace Atkins for next year. Working on a big class the year after and have verbals from high 3*s 2G and PF with 2-3 more to go. So no, not incredible but solid recruiting. I think the problem Tony is going to have with top 50 kids is no one on his teams averages a lot of points, their games are in the 40s-50s, and they don't fast break that much. Trying to sell burger boys on having to play good D in order to get in the game and telling them they're not going to be averaging 20 ppg is prolly not the easiest sell.
