Richmond @ Wake Forest - 7pm - ESPN3 - Prediction/Game Thread

I think losing has become acceptable in WF men's bb. Winning doesn't seem to be the goal. Maybe we are expecting a trophy for participation. We need Clawson's attitude on our coaching staff.

Wait right there, mister. It's called "historical competitiveness".

I think we need to be a bit patient in terms of evaluating the freshmen. These critiques seem especially unreasonable.

I don't know if we have the pieces to run the pick-and-roll, to be honest. Not every point guard is comfortable operating in PnR situations. Codi is a really capable player in the pick-and-roll, but that was it. PnRs constituted just 10% of our overall possessions last year vs. 21.6% of Codi's.

Not trying to be overly critical of Crawford, but really it's a shot at Manning for not devising a better offense to provide more options to Crawford in the flow of the offense. To me it seems he is forcing the issue because the play doesn't have enough options and there isn't enough movement.

BC is quick enough to drive with a good pick. I've seen hi-lite after hi-lite of his from HS and the first two games where he runs a nice PnR play or a beautiful pass on a backdoor cut...obviously he can pass.

Just felt like he dribbled without purpose down the stretch because he wasn't given enough options. Perhaps the offense has been simplified for the time being so the frosh aren't overwhelmed, but what the hell is practice for? Then again, when TVH or O'Brien is on the floor and not your best 5 players, it kinda limits your options for any offensive scheme I suppose.

Anyway, not trying to get so much in the weeds on this, but the talent is there to beat Richmond. Don't know how good we'll be in ACC play and higher P5 schools, but with Codi healthy and a less stubborn, more creative Manning, perhaps we can be a lot better.

Short simple as many have mentioned: cut the T/O, play better D, hit your FTs and you probably win. Damn.

I wish ESPN CBB box scores had +/- like NBA. Is there a place that has that?

Spot on.

I have to say that I think Collins is already the best player on the team. He gets good position, makes decisive moves to the basket, appears to be able to go right and left, has good form on his FTs, and seems to have a good touch. If it comes down to only having him or Thomas on the court, I honestly think I would go with Collins. Granted it is off a small sample, but I think I just trust him more than Thomas. And as others have pointed out, there is no reason you can't have both out there. No matter what, it looks like Collins should be getting at least 20-25 minutes per game. if that means he takes minutes from Dinos and Thomas, then so be it.

Just because the best player is out and a starter is out doesn't mean that you can just excuse him altogether.

The walk-ons have to play, but they don't have to play 34 minutes out of 200 when Collins and Moore (two scholarship players) play 18 total.

TVH still didn't make as many mistakes as Dinos did. Dinos play so far this year is what is inexcusable to me. Piss poor defense and stupid turnovers.
O brien playing at all baffles me, TVH has to. Collins and Moore should both get O'Briens minutes no doubt. But to say you're about to jump off the Manning bandwagon is stupid. My expectations for this team are high once we get CMM and Crab back but expecting stellar basketball without two starters is just stupid. I'm not so upset with Manning as I am with Dinos. What the hell is wrong with him? Did playing in Europe in the offseason make him worse? He needs to figure t out quickly.

To be fair, we've played 3 teams that have pretty much zero inside defense. Let's hold off on this until ACC play rolls around.

I mean how many times could we turn it over feeding the post? Why are we passing from the wing to the post and rarely using a bounce pass?

Tracy's teams could bounce pass. It seems to be a lost art.

Collins had 13 points in 12 minutes. Amazing.

TVH doesn't have to play 28 minutes though. McClinton could have easily played 28-30, Collins 3-5 more as well.

I think we will be a good team once we get CMM and Hudson back, but that doesn't exempt Manning from asinine coaching decisions.

CMM is the best player on the team and has been for 3 years. I'm not worried about losing this game as much as I am about the bad coaching this game.

Some great observations. I'm glad I'm not alone.

I am very concerned that Danny Manning is simply way over his head. im surprised by the lack of bench acumen. Not seeing a lot of coaching. I think he is doing a good job of getting players, but damn. If you coach them better you may get better ones.

Every game counts. Last year Manning cost us the chance to win at least a couple of games. Didn't matter. This is a bubble team, and some better lineups would help. Value every possession. Use your timeouts.

That was pathetic tonight and worries me.

At one point, the 5 players on the court were Doral, McClinton, Van Horn, O'Brien, and Crawford. I mean, that is just asinine.

Yes, this entire thread went crazy as soon as that line-up was on the court.

Holy shit no! That says it all right there.

Yes. That was a pathetic coaching job tonight. He did nothing in end of game situations. The whole point is the walk ons shouldn't be in there. No intensity on defense, and none from the coach. Maybe since we are young he should use some of his timeouts and refocus. I am unpleased. Yes.

Manning has shown the ability to find 3 star recruits that have four star potential and some low 4 star guys that are better. That's it. I have seen a lack of brain power with in game situations over the past two years.

I don't see it at all.

So you expect him to play an entire game with seven players? Trent Van Horn HAS to play or else we have one point guard and one shooting guard. What do you not understand about that? OBrien shouldn't be playing at all, but Crawford and Wilbekin can't play 40 minutes every single game. Obviously losing isn't fun, but you have to be reasonable when we're playing without two of our starters, one being our best player.

Manning was what, our fifth or sixth choice for the job? Thanks to Wellman and [Redacted], the program is radioactive, so all we could do was hire a coach with no track record and hope it would work out.

Every time van horn and Dino's fed Collins or Thomas from the wing, they threw chest passes and had them picked ( maybe not all but what I saw of the second half , late) it happened too much.

Coach K has won National Championships with 7 man rotations. Now Van Horn should see spot minutes as the only bench guard, but he is getting way more than that and there is no need for O'Brien to play at all.
