UVA post game thoughts - venting or whatever

They've got to hate being the national tsk-tsk today. But if you don't want people to shake their heads at you, play all the way to the :00. Either today's public shaming will make them crawl in a hole, or fight to redeem the season, to whatever degree that is possible. Given the makeup of our team, I'm afraid the former is more likely. I just don't see the fire needed to bounce back from such a mental collapse. Because that lack of fire is partially why the collapse occurred in the first place.

Nice diversion....and you know what they say about opinions. The fact remains that you were completely unaware of why I used the spelling that I did. Try thinking outside the box occasionally.

Also, regarding my defense of Bzdellick. He had an extra tough job....he was having to try to coach basketball and clean up the swamp that Dino left him at the same time.

You freaking idiot, it's not a diversion and I know why you misspelled it, I still think it is stupid. Bzdellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllick was an awful coach and quite possibly the worst suited coach that could've been hired to fix the mess you speak of. To try to defend his utter failure at his job is moronic.

Maryland's corner 3 at the buzzer to beat us was eerily similar. Shot was made in front of the Maryland bench instead of opposite of it. That game still haunts me. Wasn't it Obinna Ekezie who made it?

In the 90s, it was LaRon Profit.

Crawford clearly wants the the ball and has no problem taking the big shots. DM just needs to harness some of his fire and channel it so he becomes 'the guy' who we all want to have the ball at the end.

Not sure it gets much worse than this, meaning last night's heartbreaking loss, but I can think of a few that sting even more. Even now. That Maryland game is one, but this is worse:

The most recent error occurred on Sunday at Wake Forest, when Referee Mike Wood ruled that a shot by North Carolina State's C. C. Harrison was a 3-pointer, giving the last-place Wolfpack a 60-59 overtime victory. Replays clearly showed that Harrison's foot was on the 3-point line when he launched his leaning jump shot, which banked in at the buzzer.

''What can you do?'' Wake Forest Coach Dave Odom asked. ''What do you say? I'm not happy about it. You have a tendency when it happens to somebody else to say it's too bad. When it happens to you, it's really too bad.''

The loss dropped the Demon Deacons, who were then ranked second nationally, to 20-3 over all, 9-3 in the A.C.C., and out of first place in the conference for the first time this season. Surprising Duke, 21-5 and 10-3, can solidify its lead Tuesday night when it plays host to third-place Clemson (20-5, 8-4).

We missed five free throws in the last :39 of the game. You don't have to "play hard" to make a free throw. Just concentrate. Make a couple free throws and it doesn't matter what heave they make at the buzzer.

The strategy UVa used was not revolutionary. Foul the other team, and if they don't make their free throws we have a prayer. We didn't.

If he wants the ball then he needs to learn how to make clutch free throws because if you're the guy with the ball in end of game situations, you're going to be on the free throw line in some big end of game situations.

So many deer-in-headlights moments down the stretch.

Another great one if you watch the replay was Crawford's "turnover" after the steal. While it wasn't a smart pass by any stretch, Codi could have absolutely gotten it as it was kinda between him and Wilbekin. But you can see he's just kind of running away from the play wanting no part of clutch anything, doesn't try to help Crawford, so he just lets it float by him and it's picked off before it can get to Wilbekin. Same with Dinos - you have one of our best free throw shooters deferring to Devin Thomas to shoot them.

Wilbekin didn't close out on Brogdon despite 5 seconds left and them needing a 3. Didn't pressure the pass even after they caught it at half court. Didn't work very hard to get open or be the one to shoot free throws down the stretch. Deer-in-headlights across the board.

I thought the same thing on Crawford's TO but haven't seen the replay yet. It seemed both Wilbekin or CMM could have got that ball.

On the last shot, Wilbekin's D was horrible. Just let the guy dribble up with no pressure.

So much this. The collective frustration felt toward this team would be mitigated if they could muster even a feeble attempt at competence from the line. It's pathetic.

I just hate it for Devin most of all. That kid has improved so much, played so hard, and has left it all out there this season. He deserves to go out better, much like Brandon Chubb deserved to go better this year in football.

Realize that it may not have been posted on this thread, but those focusing on WF's poor defense in the final minutes, and particularly on the last possession should keep in mind:

- A primary reason why UVA scored so many points (18) in the final 2 minutes was not WF defense, but that UVA fouled WF 8 times in the last two minutes. When they did that. WF's possessions were limited to 5 seconds or less, which, in turn created more possessions for UVA. So, with more possessions, UVA scored more points. In that instance, WF has to make UVA pay by making free throws. BTW, while UVA did score 18 points in the last two minutes, they also failed to score on 3 straight possessions in the final minute, that should've been enough to win the game, but then the missed FTs and WF committed a turnover as WF failed to capitalize on those stops.
- The criticism of the defense on the last possession is lost on me. As Bennett stated, WF took away UVA's primary options (Brogdon and Perrentes), and UVA was left with an errant desperation heave from a player that had not attempted a shot in the game; further he threw up the shot with Devin Thomas in his face. That is exactly the shot (the heave) that you want UVA to be left with. If not for the backboard, the shot would've been an airball as it missed two feet to the left of the rim. Just ridiculous that that trash went in.

Yeah, but as Manning stated, we allowed them to throw it in all the way to half court and that was definitely worthy of criticism. I also think, since UVA had no timeouts, Crawford should've been instructed to miss the 2nd free throw after he missed the first. UVa having to rebound the ball eats at least a second of game time and a desperation 3 beats you whether you're leading by 1 or 2.

Not sure about missing the FT, UVA had time to make 2 point shot. UVA had 3.8 seconds left. They could have made a 2 point shot.

It's debatable, but I like my chances of them trying to get a decent shot off after having to grab a rebound and set something up off the fly then basically giving them a inbounds pass to half court. Our defense in that situation was not good, now whether that was bad coaching or the players not doing as they were coached, who knows, but it was bad.

Yeah you can't intentionally miss a free throw in that situation with Brogdon on the floor. That's plenty of time for one pass to him and a game-winning two pointer.

Anybody remember this game? Maryland put defenders at the FT line and by the time we secured the rebound off the intentional miss we had no time to shoot. Coaching.

Yeah, you put a couple of guys at the line to make it harder for them to rebound the miss and put 3 guys back to defend and the other team is going to have a hard time getting any kind of decent shoot with that amount of time left.
