Disney World Tips and Tricks

I assume they stuck with the whole original Beastly Kingdom concept they couldn't afford when it opened. Avatar seems to make more sense internally than to us.

The Beastly Kingdom concept makes perfect sense to me. Avatar just doesn't seem like a compelling title for kids especially, but really anyone.

Say a quote from Avatar without looking it up. I know I can't and I'm sure I'm not alone, which is insane for the #2 grossing film of all time.

Since the beginning of time, we have been the guardians and the healers of the forest. We have too long forgotten the magic powers of nature. The time has come to call on them again. Remember: all the magic of creation exists within a single tiny seed.

BOOM!

Disney reached out to James Cameron in early 2011, months after Harry Potter opened up at Universal. Disney panicked looking for top tier properties to theme around in the parks. Disney has been playing catch up and they jumped the gun. After they made the deal with Cameron, they acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. Frozen premiered in 2013. Star Wars and Frozen can directly compete with Harry Potter.

This year, they already have two animal themed hits in Zootopia and The Jungle Book that would be much better fits for Animal Kingdom.

I'm sure the Avatar Land rides will be cool, but Disney doesn't normally risk so much on new properties. They need Avatar 2, 3, and 4 to be huge.

There are going to be 3 more Avatar films !?!?! What the hell? That's gonna bomb, right? I mean a "live-action" Ferngully was cool once, but 3 more?

4 more. Cameron announced a 5th this week. and he's reportedly shooting all 4 at once.

I'd rather see a brand new attraction for GotG. Hope they actually do Big Hero 6 at Epcot.

The Jungle Book had a huge $103.6 million opening. I've always wondered why there was no Animal Kingdom area devoted to the animated film. It would make plenty of sense to build an area for the new film. More than Avatar at least. I'm not aware of any Indian restaurants on property.

Forgot that AK just opened a new Indian restaurant. Here is the overview of nighttime activities at AK. The Rivers of Light show was supposed to premiere this week but has been delayed indefinitely.

Heard yesterday that Disney is backing off the Guardians of the Galaxy re-theming of Tower of Terror and is now actually looking at doubling down on Twilight Zone. Apparently, there is a small room in the facility that is currently used for storage that they are considering changing into a bar, much like how they created the tequila bar at the Mexico pavilion in EPCOT. It would be themed along with Twilight Zone. The people creating the Edison at Disney Springs are supposedly being tapped for theming this bar as well.

Just started listening to the latest Disney Dish with Jim Hill podcast to get this info. My man, GaDeac.

And Jim Hill explained that Rivers of Light was delayed to include...you guessed it...The Jungle Book. And that was based on $70 million estimates at the time. Apparently, it was going to be themed around the Disney Nature films which usually premiere on Earth Day which is when Rivers of Light was supposed to debut as well.

Good point. When we went maybe 4 years ago I know we took a picture with King Louie though.

Just got back from the Dark Side Challenge down in Disneyworld, which was basically a 10K on Saturday and a half on Sunday. I thought they did a really good job with it, reading some Twitter comments online it seems like some people were mad that there were only a few Disney characters whereas the 501st filled in for a lot of the character photo ops. It really didn't make any difference to me, and I was ok with running on the road for about 5 miles of the half considering we got to run through Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood studios before the park opened. The medals were amazing, and so were the tech shirts. I don't think I've ever seen so much Star Wars stuff in the same place before.

Another thing my friend noticed is that on some of the rides, he forgot to scan his magic band at the end to get the pictures uploaded to his account, so when he logged in later, he was surprised to find that those pictures were there anyway. I guess Disney has scanners that can monitor where you are at probably any time. Kinda big brother-ish but it would definitely be useful if your child got lost in one of the parks.

Yeah. Disney has scanner at the photo spots on rides. Probably some at other key spots in the park like exits.

Word is the other parks are going to use a system similar to FitBit instead of doing Magic Bands.

So you need to get a certain number of steps for rides? That won't work for the hover round squad.

I've never seen it. :couch:

You aren't missing much. Watch Ferngully instead. The story, acting, and dialogue are very meh. The SFX were pretty good in 2009. It literally came out, made $3 BILLION!, won some awards, then vanished from the zeitgeist completely.

Avatar is like a fashion trend that explodes and quickly falls out of vogue. Everyone looks back on old pictures like "what in the fuck were we thinking?"
