Charleston Dining/Attractions

Heading back down to Charleston this weekend. Wife and I got reservations at the Darling Oyster Bar.

Had a good dinner last night at the Darling. Enjoyed it, but not as much as the Ordinary. Cocktail afterwards at the Belmont, hat tip to Biff. Then had some fucking amazeballs ice cream at Jeni's, holy damn. This morning got breakfast at Eli's Table. Good times, good times.

Jeni's started in Columbus, that's some good shit. Glad they got that listeria scare out of the way earlier this year. So nice that you were able to enjoy Ohio's finest in South Carolina.

According to the googles, they sell select pints of Jeni's at the Fresh Market that I drive past every single day. Dear God. May need to create a new Mint category for ice cream.

Liked Jeni's until they got Listeria twice in 6 mos

I guy I know paid for his swimming pool and boat by getting listeria from a Texas bbq joint, not sure which one

Will be in Charleston for a week with parents and adult sister and her husband. Staying on Isle of Palms. I used to date a girl down there so have been to Charleston a few times. I have eaten at Cypress, Magnolias, Macintosh, and Poe's. I've been generating a list of places to go. Could use some input:

Hominy Grill (for a breakfast or lunch)
Trattoria Luca
Martha Lou's Kitchen
Bacco
Home Team BBQ (Lunch or casual dinner)
Fig
The Glass Onion (for a breakfast maybe)
Poe's (for a lunch)
Husk ???

I'm mixed on Husk and Poogan's Porch. I really want to take my parents there for the atmosphere. I've heard really mixed opinions on both. I've not been to either. Many of the locals I met down there swore that there were way better restaurants in Charleston than Husk.

Dad, bro in law, and I like seafood. Mom and sis do not. Dad and Mom really only want one, maybe two fancier meals. They're more casual. Looking for at least one good, casual seafood spot overlooking the water or Shem's Creek. Bro in law's bday is while we're down there so trying to think of a good seafood spot for him. He's fine with casual. But maybe the Ordinary or Hank's?

Also, coming from Cincy and having been to Charlestown a few times, I just think Jeni's is completely overrated. It's good. But more than anything, it's mastered the art of presentation. It's Bobo ice cream. (Bohemian Bourgeousie). They have fancy ingredients and they make it sound like it's friggin' amazing. But the flavors rarely pop for me. But hey, the presentation is really nice.

I always had great meals at Husk, but had a couple of so-so experiences at Poogans.

I don't find the atmosphere at Husk to be particularly enchanting so I'm not sure what it is you're trying to get there.

Casual seafood spots - the Wreck or Bowans Island. Hard to beat the divey, dockside atmosphere and views at those places.

Good call on Trattoria Lucca; one of the best in town.

I feel like I've walked past it and thought the southern style porch lit up looked cool. But maybe that was Poogan's Porch.

It's a great looking building and nice interior, but I don't think it's special or unique. What makes Husk special is the concept - commitment to southern ingredients, use of heirloom grains, etc.

If you're going to FIG or Husk I hope it's more than a couple of weeks from now. FIG takes reservations 30 days out and gets filled up quickly. Otherwise you can do the bar and take your chances.

Agree with LCD that the atmosphere at Husk is only so-so. The bar at Husk is really cool though. I've only had great meals at Husk. Same goes for FIG.

I won't set foot in Poogan's or 82 Queen.

The Ordinary is more of a raw bar/ than total seafood place. They have fish, but that's not their real focus.

The Wreck and Bowens Island are great, but it's a lot of fried food. If you're staying at IOP, I'd rule Bowens out.

Poe's and Home Team are great for lunch. Sticking with Sullivans Island, I would strongly recommend The Obstinate Daughter for brunch or dinner.

Hank's and Peninsula Grill probably would work for you.

I'd recommend The McIntosh for a place with seafood and other dishes. Business casual dress would be fine there, although I'm sure you could get away with shorts.

Shem Creek seafood restaurants that I like are The Wreck and Water's Edge. I tend not to eat at Shem Creek though. I do like the hot waitresses at Red's Ice House.

Thanks. Fig/Husk over SNOB?

Don't forget McCrady's if you are there in time for the Reopening!

Go to John Lewis BBQ over Hometeam unless you really want chicken wings, their pulled pork is very good and they have a cocktail list that rivals the game changer.
