Ongoing NC GOP debacle thread

McCrory definitely had the uncomfortable laugh thing down. Almost seemed flippant in response to Cooper's criticisms.

we're starting to get our first tastes of disdain for public educators in this state. my wife has been the top candidate for teaching jobs in 3 different counties now, and each time they've tried to push her hire through only to be told no for budgetary reasons. first job ended up a 2/3 full-time position that they had to split with another school (and utilized someone already there), the others would just have to be filled by teachers taking on bigger workloads. why advertise these jobs if they're not approved?

Did you notice this laugher toward the end?

“Under Governor McCrory and in prior administrations, OSBM has consistently asked for agencies to identify efficiencies so that we are responsibly spending taxpayer money,” wrote Heath. “The 8/26 memo is reflective of sound budget practice which has enabled Governor McCrory to target spending in priority areas such as education, teacher pay and savings reserve. Given that North Carolina has one of the best, if not the best, performing economies in the nation and the world, the 8/26 memo was not made with the expectation that the state will be facing a deficit.”

You hear that? THE WORLD.

Meh asking departments to begin thinking about and preparing cuts is fairly standard practice ahead of a budget cycle. If the cuts are in the proposed budget then I'd say it's an issue, although it may be Roy Cooper's budget in the spring.

Am I missing something in that article?

We are projecting a $400M+ budget surplus and are seeking to reduce the education budget by over $120M?

What the hell is going on?

All departments were asked to look at areas for possible cuts, possibly through "program delivery and agency operational efficiency." It's fairly standard practice, as I already stated. Asking departments to look for potential efficiency improvements (and cost-savings) is to be commended, regardless of the party in power. Much better than just slashing everyone's budgets without a discussion.

Now, what may be done with any funding reductions/efficiency improvements found by departments in the next budget is up for speculation based on who wins in November, and past history.

Thanks for the information. You are much more versed in this than I am (obviously).

Appreciate it.

McCrory dominated that debate, IMHO. If he wasn't such a moron with regards to HB2, he would win in a landslide.

But all of the polls showed Cooper winning. Bigly.

Aren't there further tax cuts that are still coming in phases? Revenue is going to continue going down.
