Considering the death penalty [name redacted] was, any coach coming into this shit situation should be on a 3rd year NIT, 4th year NCAA expectation schedule. That's not to say a great coach couldn't get it done earlier, but even Tony Bennett only made the NCAA's once in his first 4 years at UVA.
Manning's getting a bit of a raw deal here due to the strength of the ACC. This team is worlds better than year 3 [name redacted] and should only improve next year. Compare that to [name redacted] riding a senior Travis McKie that he didn't recruit then having 3 transfers once he got another year... I get that fans are bitter and disenfranchised, but the overwhelming negativity based on one loss at home to a solid Clemson team is pretty crazy. I mean, win 2 of the next 3 and we're right back on pace for most people's expectations. And what's worse - 36 minutes of great basketball followed by a freakish meltdown or something like what Duke and UNC put up - 40 minutes of bad basketball resulting in big upsets?
I realize I'm one of the more optimistic posters on the boards, and I'll always subscribe to the "players win games, coaches build teams" philosophy so I'll never buy into heaping losses like Clemson on a couple Manning decisions - but the starting 5 next year has huge potential, and this year is far from over. The recruiting effort has seen a big uptick minus the Giles fiasco that torpedoed this year's class.
That being said, I'm extremely curious about how the team responds to that loss. I'd love to see a BC drubbing at home where we keep defensive pressure on them all game. Could also see us coming out tight and missing a bunch of shots early, then folding again during crunch time to pretty much destroy any hope we're still harboring for this season. Odd to say but BC at home might be Manning's biggest game of his career to date.
