Danny Manning Credibility Watch

I think Manning's fate will be decided by the 2018 recruiting class he is currently putting together and next season's performance. We should have a very clear picture of where the program is heading by the end of next basketball season.

Personally, I'm not excited about the current pool of potential coaching replacements nor the possibility of another extended rebuild. So hopefully, Manning pans out.

I agree that the next hire needs to be made whoever our new AD is.

Who is the best realistic replacement anyway? Will Wade at VCU?

The fact that a team with:

James Johnson (fr.)
Jeff Teague (fr.)
Ish Smith (so.)
Jamie Skeen (so.)
Chase McFarland (so.)

...went 17-13 against the 61st toughest schedule in the country is mind-boggling. I know I'm thinking of them as where they are now/what they became as a pro player, but holy cow that's a lot of talent to miss the postseason.

No shooting at all on that team though. 32% from behind the arc on the year.

If I remember JT's frosh year correctly, he went on a tear at the end the end of the season and shot very well from three.

Stats are nice, but the 07 team had a bunch of strong outside defenders. This year's outside shooters would have had a tough time scoring against them.

Jeff Teague's freshman year (07-08), WF was mediocre at defending the 3 (31% #98 in the nation; 7th out of 12 in the ACC); teams shoot the 3 better now, but the current WF team is ranked #141st at defending the 3 (34%; 5th out of 12 in the ACC). BTW, the the 2007-8 team, was itself a terrible 3 point shooting team they shot 31% from 3 (#300; 9th out of 12 in the ACC). The current WF team a superior 3 point shooting team (39%: #32).

At the end of the day, WF needs to start winning basketball games. Manning is on year #3. There is only one player on the current roster that DM did not recruit. Yes, [] left WF with a roster of misfit toys, but the validity of that excuse fades with each passing year (and each game) as the players gain experience under DM.

We were 1-4 against top 35 offenses (including two losses to #53 overall GT) that year giving up 84 ppg. Wake has a top 25 offense this year.

FWIW the stats aren't really that close. Kenpom has this year's team about 3.2 ppg better than the 08 team, and sports reference has it at about 4 points.

I'd be happy to take those points all day and all night. The only problem is Dino is an absolutely awful coach. He might find a way to blow that game.

Basketball is a game of match-ups not stats. The match-ups favor the 07-08 team.

Agreed. That explanation is gone next year, and isn't really needed this year.

As of right now, this team is on track to win 16 games and finish top 50. No excuse needed unless he falls off that pace. Next years team should be significantly better.

That comment honestly may be the worst non-Tunnels post I've ever seen on the boards. It just oozes Wake Forest snobbery. If someone who just absolutely hates Wake Forest alumni stereotypes read it they'd say, "Yep, that is EXACTLY what Wake people are like, fuck them." It's the equivalent of the perfectly punchable Sheyer/Grayson/Paulus/Wojo faces Duke basketball keeps finding.

The matchups didn't work out so well in 2008, not sure why they would be any different here.

We aren't talking about a generic game. We are talking about two specific teams playing each other. We aren't talking about averages or anything else. It's about how they would play.

If Bryant covered Jeff, Ish would have lay-up and lob drills against against any of our current guards. He'd blow by them every time and have the choice of a lay-up or lob to James, LD or even Chas. As good as JC is, he's nowhere near as strong as James was as a frosh.

The match-ups are terrible for this year's team. The stats could be interesting but are meaningless if the match-ups are bad.

Closest comp for us in the ACC that year was probably GT (though we are actually a little better). Wake lost twice to that team and gave up 83.5 ppg.

Let's put it this way RJ, regardless of whether this team matches up with or would have beaten that team, this team would have gone better than 17-13 against that schedule.

To make it apples to apples, you'd have to Dino coaching them. That would be the downfall of your premise.

Can we request different random teams of yesteryear for a custom match-up analysis in this thread?

Is Dino going to be coaching our team next year?

My original point was:

This team is performing better than the 07-08 team by a decent margin. Like that team, we are returning everyone (including our coach) and adding a highly rated, defensive minded recruit.

If Chaundee can play anything close to the role Aminu played on that team then we will improve significantly, just like that team did.

Silence you plebe. Everyone with a six+ figure salary knows Wes is the FUTURE

yes, but DGO could not keep up that level of recruiting...he peaked with this class and got lucky with Duncan. great defensive coach but not the recruiter that people are saying here.

Odom recruited Rogers, Childress, Duncan, Howard, and Songaila, not to mention his second tier of players like Rutland, Dawson, O'kelley. Odom was the best recruiter we've had. His only real failure as a recruiter was putting way too much hope in Loren Woods.

ETA, ok, so obviously Prosser was a great recruiter too...probably better. I get a little worked up over Odom criticism. He was a great coach.
