Social mobility among Wake alums compared to other institutions

Palma: oh you're an engineer? Do you design train engines or bridges?

That or designing ferris bueller alarm clocks

Oy.

Median individual income at age 34 $71,500
...for men $85,000
...for women $58,800

10% raise/year for 4 years to make that up.

Right but that still ignores the discussion of why women aren't going into big 4 firms/banks, if in fact that's part of the reason for the wage gap. Is it a structural issue, is it just random distribution, etc.?

What percentage of working years by age 34 do men generally have relative to women at the same age? Another way to ask the question, how many years of work experience (and then as a percentage) do women miss out on by the time they're age 34 due to having children that men don't miss out on?

There's a solid amount of research that, although somewhat counter-intuitive, the gender wage gap can be decreased by more liberal parental (note: not maternal) leave policies across the board.

I think 4 years seems like more than average "child rearing" time by 34, but I could be projecting my experience. But if it's 4 years of lost work time, then the difference is fully explained by this.

I just live in the 21st century where computer engineering happens to be both highly prevalent and lucrative.

One would think you would then base your opinion on the top results in google. From the search "most popular type of engineering" here is your first result. "Popular type of engineer careers. Types of engineering degrees"

First: Civil. 2nd: Industrial 3rd: Automotive 4th: Mechanical.

Just another one for Milosh

there's a passing mention of Apple, Microsoft and Google. No one thinks of them as engineering companies. It's also listed last

CAREER OPTIONS FOR BACHELOR DEGREE GRADS

Some of the fields an undergraduate engineering student can choose from are:
•Architecture
•Civil Engineering
•Industrial Engineering
•Chemical Engineering
•Electrical Engineering
•Mechanical Engineering
•Computer Science

just READING about engineers makes me want to kill one. there's a reason wolowitz is the idiot on big bang theory.

I guess I'll take the l. Software, systems, and other computer engineers are not in fact engineers.

agreed. they probably don't even know how to get the train MOVING.

Not sure where'd I'd be if the great Todd McFall had not taken me under his wing and not gotten offended when I never came to class but dropped truth bombs when I did. Probs an underemployed philosophy major or lawyer zombie with 200k in debt.

Yes! McFall was great.

...but I still went to Salamanca, became a spanish major, haven't used my spanish, am no longer fluent, etc. Somehow I still managed to be a female making male pay (apparently), so at least I've got that going for me. Probably that PSF masters degree I picked up.

And then peeps are like oooo I love Spanish and Salamanca changed my life! Wait, being 85% fluent in Spanish is not a marketable primary career skill?

Should have been a poly sci major! Sad!

The good news is that English majors and Tribble types overtake engineering salaries on average after fifteen or so years out of school. Takes 'em longer to find a field and advance, but then they own the world.

Aside from being lawyers what are you referring to?

And wait, we offer Spanish as a major? For what godly purpose? To be a translator? Supposedly we have a selective admission criteria and yet people choose this?

Next thing you're gonna tell me is you're actually really scientists because you got a computer science degree.

Actually I'm a scientist too, given my masters in the science of accountancy. #notengineers
