Official Syracuse - Wake game thread (Foot of snow)

I don't get the "Childress will be good as a junior talk."

He's looked quite calm and collected the past few games. He'll take a step forward next season and be a really quality player. We shouldn't have to be playing frosh PGs anyways. He's not quite as quick as Ish, nor does he have his strength, but it is close and he's a much better shooter.

We blew an 8 point second half lead. Again. Ugh.

I think we might have been up 8 in the second half against FSU as well. Up 13 at home against Clemson at one point. Was hoping that State win would allow us to get over the hump mentally and close out games, but I guess not.

We were really lucky to be up by 8. We weren't playing as well as we were against FSU and Clemson.

He's the best 3 point shooter on the team, the second best shooter on the team who plays over 20 min and has less turnovers per game than JC, BC, Dinos and the same as Chill who plays under 20 min a game... solid take though.

well woods took 1 fing 3 tonight. the "best" aren't scared as shit to shoot. Just dont understand his thoughts.

Not sure why Dinos didn't shoot more from the high post. He's the guy we want there to find Collins, shoot, or find another shooter. He mostly just whipped it back to the perimeter.

Exactly. Took him nearly 35 mins to score his first two points. No clue why we kept trying to move it around the perimeter when shots weren't falling and JC was clearly dominating the post and boards. Dinos should have been told to take the shot or look for John (or just hope JC would get the OR). Don't get it...

We've been in every game this year except the nova game really. Doesn't matter if it was home or away. That is a great improvement from where we were. Now we need to wins the ones vs those teams that are our equal or worse on the road in conference. Like Saturday.

We were really lucky to be up by 8. We weren't playing as well as we were against FSU and Clemson.

Agreed that it's good to actually be in every game again, and that we weren't playing well tonight, but continuing to blow 2nd half leads has got to take a toll on the players. It certainly does on the fan base.

woods was supposed to be some stone cold sharp shooter. He's just another tentative short ass defensive liability guard we always get and have to play.

Statistically it's shown he's one of the best in the ACC and I also don't think he was "scared as shit" to shoot seeing how he only took one 3 last game and nobody had a problem with it and that was coming off of a 3-4 game. He doesn't force his shots and if he did you would complain about him jacking up contested shots.

When Dinos and Arians struggle to score we are like a three-legged stool. Tonite you could add in Woods and Crawford to that so we were really hobble. Cuse defense had a lot to do with that. We have to figure out how to get more production from Arians and Dinos as they go for long stretches with little contribution other than turnovers and missed shots with an occasional rebound in there. We need points.

Before that. He half-assed it down the court before that point-in-time. I don't care if we're losing by 30, you play hard til the whistle blows.

That is one of my few complaints about him. He seems to have times where he well...... half-asses it. It drives me crazy. Hope he improves that part of his game.

We had a great offensive game plan tonight, but we didn't execute that game plan. If you could tell, we put a guard at the free throw for a possible entry pass at times that opened up the zone when we got it there. We also did something else unnoticed that would've worked had our guards executed. We would put Dinos/Arians in the corner while having Collins post up down low. If our guards could figure out how to properly execute an entry pass, then either Collins has a one on one with their 5/4 that I'll take every time or the bottom outside player in the zone crashes and he has Arians/Dinos wide open for three in the corner. At that point it's eay money to either shoot or rotate the ball and you'll have an open shot at some point. We didn't shoot well and our entry passes were trash tonight. Manning had a great offensive game plan however.

Or if they call either of the two fouls correctly aka calling it a shooting foul on craw and an offensive foul instead of a foul on Chill.

How bad was the Childress call? My feed was blurry and it looked like he might have flopped a bit but I wasn't sure.

Crawford call was egregious but not surprising. Refs at all levels are hesitant to call that a shooting foul for some reason even though it's clear to everyone in the gym that he's in the act of shooting.

He had a decent game. I'll need to see a little more before I change my opinion. Seems like he could be a decent role player on a good ACC team in a couple of years. Not much more. Hope I'm wrong.

All I know is if we keep recruiting players that we expect/hope to be really good when they're juniors... there's a lot of 8-10 ACC seasons ahead of us regardless of who our coach is.

Dude, he is that for us right now. Last four games 16, 7, 9 & 10.

To me it looked like a pretty obvious push off. You either call offensive or nothing IMO.

Yeah hard to see how anyone could fault Manning for our offense at any point of this game. The defense has to get better. I think that's part personnel, part executing the system (a lot of guys got lost on rotations tonight leading to wide open 3s or layups), and part coaching.

I disagree. the best plan would have been to have Mitoglou at the foul line. the problem with the game plan was that the guard that received the ball at the foul line was smothered by taller longer players. Mitoglou would have provided the height to see over the defense and the ability to make the 15 foot jumper if they fell back on Collins. You could still have had Arians or one of the guards in the corner for a three.
If the plan was really to have Mitoglou intentionally miss that second foul shot, then the design was poor. Why not have Mcclinton in the game instead of van horn. He is much more athletic and better rebounder. Impossible play to pull off, but at least give us a chance with proper personnel
The defense continues to struggle with big guys showing at the three point line. Tonight that repeatedly left Lydon open. Mitoglou did a 360 on Lydon's last three because he completely lost his man with tae defense maneuver. We just do not have the athletes to recover with that defense.

We did a little of that. I'm not sure I trust Dinos' decision making enough to put him there.

Our offense wasn't the problem tonight (I'd guess our efficiency was around our adjusted average, which is really good).

Which is what I said before the game.

KP Cuse Report:

Cuse has a short bench (#258 in bench minutes), but is big on the floor (#6 in the nation in average height). Cuse starters are: 6-0, 6-6, 6-7, 6-8 and 6-9 with 6-10 and 6-9 coming off the bench.

This contributes to the problem for us with the zone.

1. The guys on the wings are big and have long arms.

2. Entry passes are difficult over the top and they are long enough to tip it when it gets near JC.

3. Our guard are listed as 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3, when we have three guards in there and the tallest is 3 inches shorter than their 2nd smallest guy it's going to be a challenge.

I know we want it in the corner but I think that was a function of our ball movement from side to side being a little too slow and allowing 'cuse to obstruct the passing lane.

Yeah Dinos could definitely see, pass, and shoot over the defender (which we did a few times) but having only two guards up top without a guard flashing to the middle and jumping back out (like the picks we were running) makes it hard to get ball movement if the entry pass isn't there. That's why having a guard in the corner essentially just makes it 5 on 4 for the defense. Entry passes were crucial tonight and we did a poor job executing them. The Cuse zone was very effective tonight but entry passes and poor 3 shooting were the issues tonight not offensive gameplan.

Yeah I do not understand why Van Horn is the player to come off the bench in that end of game scenario. I was thinking that as I saw him taking off his warmup shirt. If McClinton or Moore or any other division 1 athlete is in the game, we might make a play on that Dinos miss. It just makes no sense why you put Van Horn in in that situation.

And I realize that that's a long shot to happen, but still, you should play your best players and I don't think Van Horn should be coming in over even McClinton in that kind of situation (much less in general).
