Should there be consequences for universities that don't stand up for free speech?

Just have admissions make sure not to admit undocumented students. The current students will be out of the system shortly.

Besides, when has federal government expansion ever scared you? Enforcement of immigration law is one thing the federal government absolutely should be handling, and if necessary expanding to cover effectively.

I don't disagree with this - which is why I pointed out I've always been intrigued by the dissonance between the parties on states' rights and immigration.

I acknowledged this in my post. Practically speaking, what does this law look like?

The targeted population from the link isn't students but rather undocumented immigrants more generally. At issue here is the sanctuary campus proclamation by universities receiving federal funds.

Since the proposal itself is built on a straw man argument, I speculated that enforcement of this will target Latino students, particularly first generation or second generation immigrants (regardless of whether they are undocumented) and that it will then necessarily compel students, faculty, and administrators to inform on these students. For faculty and administrators, the proposal advocates labeling any form of noncompliance - professional confidentiality and accountability procedures be damned - as a felony.

That is how police states operate, LK, and a dangerously slippery slope at its very best.

At least no one died at UCB. Could have been worse. Could have been the Bowling Green Massacre.

By all means, keep defending Milo, but at least know what you're defending:

"Milo Yiannopoulos reportedly planned to publicly name undocumented students at his cancelled Berkeley University event.

The Breitbart senior editor, who was one of Twitter’s most notorious trolls until the site permanently banned him in July, was due to speak at the university on Wednesday but the event was called off due to heated protests.

Demonstrators threw smoke bombs, started fires and smashed windows.

Berkeley University officials warned Mr Yiannopoulos, an outspoken Donald Trump supporter, was planning to use the talk to target students who do not have documentation to live in the US.

“We are deeply concerned for all students’ safety and ability to pursue their education here at Cal beyond Milo’s speech,” the university’s Office of Student Affairs said in a letter sent to Berkeley College Republicans, the students hosting the event, on Tuesday.

“Milo’s event may be used to target individuals, either in the audience or by using their personal information in a way that causes them to become human targets to serve a political agenda.”

Mr Yiannopoulos told The Independent that suggestions he would use the event to name undocumented migrants were "a total fabrication" and categorically denied the reports.

George Ciccariello-Maher, a professor at Drexel University, claimed reliable sources believed Mr Yiannopoulos was planning on outing undocumented students.

“Reliable sources say Milo planned to publicly name undocumented students @UCBerkeley. Debate over: shutting him down was necessary & good,” he wrote on Twitter.

Far-right news site Breitbart published an article a day before the event, saying Mr Yiannopoulos would use the Berkeley talk to claim US universities have become “sanctuary campuses that shelter illegal immigrants from being deported”.

“Backed by the Freedom Center (Mr Yiannopoulos) will call for the withdrawal of federal grants and the prosecution of university officials who endanger their students with their policies, starting with UC President and former Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano and Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks,” reads the article.

Since the talk was cancelled, Mr Yiannopoulos has claimed he was planning to discuss cultural appropriation in a full Native American headdress at the event.

President Trump responded to the protests against Mr Yiannopoulos by appearing to threaten to withdraw Berkeley's federal funding.

“If UC Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view - NO FEDERAL FUNDS?” he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Yiannopoulos was permanently suspended from Twitter in July following claims he had aggravated and helped lead the Twitter abuse of Ghostbusters actor Leslie Jones. He has been dubbed a spokesperson for the so-called “alt-right movement” - a political movement which has been accused of racism, antisemitism, misogyny, and of sharing an ideology with far-right parties such as the French National Front.

During a recent talk at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Mr Yiannopoulos publicly named and mocked a transgender student for filing a Title IX complaint about bathroom access."

He's a fucking douchebag and the scummiest scum of the earth. Fortunately for him he participates in a society that not only allows him to spew his douchey venom but also allows foreigners (He's British by way of Greece) to even come here in the first place. But at the end of the day he's a fucking zero that adds no value to society and actually detracts from it.

Also those lashing out at UC Berkeley might want to re-direct their anger to those who were actually trying to stifle the speech through violent means.

Berkeley Republicans VP: University ‘worked tirelessly’ to protect our rights

Don’t take my word for it, though. In an interview Friday, Peter Sittler, a sophomore at Berkeley and vice president of the organization that sponsored Yiannopoulos’s visit, the Berkeley College Republicans, told me the school’s administration, from Chancellor Nicholas Dirks on down, “worked tirelessly to plan [the event] and make sure it went through.” From the time Sittler’s group first proposed hosting Yiannopoulis two months ago, the university “acted in good faith,” and was “fully committed to protecting our First Amendment rights,” he said.

OOOOOOOPPPPPPPSSSSSS

ITCwife is SUPER salty today after an annoying/grueling hiring process for a spot in her dept. today was the final meeting to vote/decide and she was out-voted by the other members of the committee who went with a sub-par candidate solely because she was a "diversity candidate" vs a [white] woman with way better credentials (and personality). Her main opponent dropped the "if you don't vote for this woman, I guess you don't care about diversity on campus".

If you plan on leaving the left, BKF will be glad to help you find your way.

Seeing the sausage get made can be a bit disheartening/infuriating at times for sure.

the kicker is that they've hired two new profs. the first one was shoved down their throats by the Administration and was another unqualified diversity candidate (woman) and now this.

Interesting legal issue.

What's the legal definition of "sub-par candidate?"

Wrong thread, please post in palmas #fakenews thread. Yeah this is total bullshit, if he was planning on calling out illegal immigrants don't you think he would of pulled similar stunts at one of the many speeches he has made at college campuses around the country? This one gets canceled so bullshit gets made up and there is noway to disprove pure speculation.

There is also a difference in saying I agree with the guy, and saying he should be allowed for to have a not so unpopular opinion, and express said opinion.
