Bands that never made it big that you liked

Wow. Some of you are my age. I come from the Comboland era in Raleigh.

Arrogance
Fabulous Knobs
Don Dixon's solo work
Did Mother's Finest make it? If not...them.

Mid 80's
Concrete Blonde was a great Pop punk band that toured the east coast.
Dash Rip Rock

Late 80s/early 90s
Whiskeytown (although Ryan Adams obviously made it)
The Backsliders

The Backsliders

Backsliders are still alive and kicking. Took a few guitar lessons from Steve Howell a few years back but felt bad because I was so terrible felt like a real musician should never have to hear the crap escaping from my fingertips.

also, Whiskeytown was more like mid 90's

Let's Active
Pylon
Guadalcanal Diary
The Mundahs

Thank you.

Loved me some Mundahs. I saw them a LOT during the summer (and fall) of '89 when living on HHI. Thought they had a really unique sound (hard lounge, per Al Cech) and they were an excellent live show.

Such a big, cavernous voice on such a little guy.

When you were in Hilton Head did you ever see Gene Murrell at Remy's or Hudson's?

Yeah I dug them too they played Boone a lot in the late 80's early 90s

On the opposite end of the sound spectrum, I really really loved The Husbians from Boone.

Ride
Charlatans UK
Supergrass
Ash
Stone Roses
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Grant Lee Buffalo
The Walkmen

They all had a reasonable degree of success, but if Oasis made it big , they should have.

Stone Roses and Walkmen played stadiums. Supergrass and Ash, too. Possibly JSBX?

Autopassion is a local Winston band that I thought could've made it. I'm still not sure what happened there. Love Language and the Capulets got some press back in the day, though they never actually broke out as far as I know.

The Broadcast with vocalist Caitlin Krisko may be on their way to close but no cigar status.

Not that I recall. Remy's was a favorite...as was the Old Post Office.

He's a short fat guy with a great voice. He basically played Remy's 3-5 nights a week and Hudson's the same, but earlier.

For close to twenty years, he had a really tough life. From September to May, he'd play clubs, bars and concerts in HB, Newport and some in LA. From May to September, he lived and played in Hilton Head.

Snakegrinder. A band that played a genre of music just as that genre went out of favor. One of the musicians from that group is still making a living playing steel guitar.
