The Pit Parenting Thread

You should meticulously take apart their iPhones, give them the pieces and say at their age in China if they had done as bad in school they would be sent to the iPhone factory.

I'm curious what the follow-through will be next school year; any plans for addressing that as the year goes on? Laying out expectations and consequences ahead of time?

eta: good luck!!

I unfortunately had the opportunity to teach a middle school class for 6 months. Now I'm in higher ed. Be sure to have a game plan for the academic year in the event that their graded falter.

Dunno where else to throw it so let's change the subject. Always been pro choice and thinking I'd not want kids (way too self absorbed) but I put one in the oven about a month ago. Gonna go the abortion route, but I think I get the conservative side of the argument more than I did previously, because it's gonna be weird as hell to look back 5-10-15 years from now and think what if.

Whoaaa are you being serious? How does your girlfriend feel?

The casually dropping this information is the most Palma thing. I'd say you keep it only to help counterbalance the plethora of unintelligent people having kids, the world needs you.

Wait till you're both ready imo, would also be weird to bring a kid into a relationship you've been in less than a year iirc. But real talk why is she not on birth control?

You are an open book bro, damn.

I'm not in the same spot, but I've thought about if it happened, and I'd think we would both want to keep it.

Godspeed Palma.

Well the pull out method worked for me in the 20s, was a half a second late just one time. Thought all those years with a laptop on my lap made me shooting blanks. Had no idea my boys could swim

I'm not Italian but damn I'd be like 10x more likely to keep it if I knew how it was a boy. Girls are cute till they're 12, then it's 15 years of hell I couldn't handle.

Boys are annoying until they get to be 12 but then get cool once they can start beating you at shit.

Maybe, but the 13-14 girls that I teach are generally cooler than their male counterparts. Yeah BFs and dating and all that shit will be a nightmare, but you can deal with it.

Damn, Palma.

Best thoughts to you both as you figure out plans from here. I value a right to choice but also know if I were ever in that situation... I'm having a baby.

Yeah, get that kid out of your room as quickly as possible. 12 Hours of Sleep by 12 Weeks is a guidebook. Read it. Learn it. Live it.

Tell me more about this book. I wake up most mornings with our son sleeping on my wife's chest, which freaks me out/drives me crazy.

I thought I'd have no problem with it but when it happens to you and you think "if
I do nothing it's gonna be a person" slightly different perspective. Was definitely a day or two I tried to talk myself into it..... then just I did the accountant maths of 2 incomes vs 1, adding another health insurance on my plan and baby expenses and that's $5k a month I ain't willing to assume responsibility for. Maybe if I RTQ'd it up and had a $200k nest egg, but dat wagyu.

Weird though on the tunnels the republicans would be both against welfare and abortion. The math ain't no joke. Have a kid and you're fucked financially.

It's not... but think of how many people who don't make 6 figures that make it work.

Republicans want you to have the kid but shame you if do and make it harder to raise a kid. Republicans want to restrict abortion access but act like making it to marriage before having a kid is an easy path to success. It's messed up.

Nobody is truly ready to have a kid. I was 33 when I had my first kid. He turns 8 this month. My wife and I had been together just over 3 years at that point.

I'm still not truly ready to be a dad. I've got to take both my boys and their best friend to two different summer camps in 6.5 hours. I'm not ready for that. But I'm going to do it.

This. My son was having a meltdown this weekend (mom was at the store) and my dad was reaching into his grandpa bag of tricks to settle him down. After a while we had this exchange:

ME: "When did you figure out what you were doing as a dad?"
DAD: (chuckling) "I don't think you ever figure it out. You just say stuff with confidence."

Humans are really good at rising to the occasion. You're ready because the kid's there. I think Palma and his gf should do what's best for them (and no judgement)...but, yeah, I agree with the train of thought that says you're never ready.

The book we called the Sleep Bible was Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth. I swear by it. All three of our kids we sleeping through the night in their own room by 11 weeks.

Of course now two of them seem to be morons so take any advice I provide with a grain of salt. Facepalm
