Week 1 depth chart

Take a look at the stats from every pre-season scrimmage. By any objective standard, Wolford outplayed Hinton this Fall. Clawson didn't change his mind; Wolford beat Hinton out. That said, if Wolford struggles in games going forward, it won't take much to put Hinton back at the starting spot.

Sure. But you can't just claim people skeptical of Wolford are unreasonable to base on what we've seen on the field the last 3 seasons when Clawson came to the same conclusion until the last month of practice.

Coming from a guy who thinks Hinton should be the starter, I applaud Clawson. Not only on the Wolford decision but the Scotty over Cortez decision. He sent an important message to the team that if you show up in practice, compete, and truly "win" a job, Clawson will stick to that principle.

With that being said, we will see who our QB is in week 2 vs. BC.

I seriously doubt either QB will move the needle vs Presby.

It will be interesting to see which Wolford shows up: the one who played against Temple showed up in summer camp or the guy who played and looked kinda scared in many games during the season. If Wake has the Temple/summer camp Wolford, that would be good.

Pilch, I'm not sure which "some people" you're talking about.

Clawson named Hinton the starter based on everything that happened until the last month of practice. That means we've seen why Clawson put Hinton ahead of Wolford, but we haven't seen why he changed his mind.

Because every Fall camp is another opportunity to win the starting job. Hinton won it on the field in 2016 and held it until Fall. Wolford took it back with his superior camp play. This is very, very normal.

Paris Black suspended 3 games for violation of team rules.

I didn't say it wasn't normal. What I did say is fans didn't see how he won the job so it makes sense for fans to be skeptical until we see him keep it.

Although they were in a 2-QB to start 2016, Wolford was removed from the position in game 2 because he couldn't move the ball against Tulane + Duke. I could see a similar situation play out this year. Slow start versus Presby + Slow start Vs. BC, then back to Hintdog

I'm pretty sure everyone will move the ball against Presbyterian. The Tulane defense was actually pretty damn good last year IIRC. That could definitely happen against Boston College though.

ETA: just checked and Tulane was 31 in "total defense" last year according to NCAA.com

which would make it reflect worse upon any of the 2 QBs who don't move the ball against Presby (if that happens). Wolford is on a short leash like last season, I assume.

One thing to keep in mind is that summer/fall camp for the QB's is about passing. As Clawson noted, Hinton's greatest strength, his elusive running, is negated by camp rules on QB down by touch. His weaknesses, reading defenses and throwing accuracy on short/medium passes were exposed in the camp format. His ability to create plays with his legs will be more evident and useful against the more aggressive defenses Wake will face.

Wolford's strengths - reading defenses and passing accuracy - were spotlighted by the camp rules. Thus he looked better and won the job. He also benefits from the maturation of the receiving corps. Now let's hope that he can continue to look good against live defenses.

Wolford's strength is reading defenses? Considering he has thrown 30 TDs to 35 INTs. But I don't have advanced metrics in front of me.

Based on the bloggersodear podcasts, our oline is still struggling big time so don't get too excited

Right. My point was that I think both QBs will be fine against Presby because it's Presby. If there is a change at starting QB against BC, it would be due to injury.

Only two senior starters on offense (almost just one as Wolford apparently nosed out Hinton for the starting spot), and four on defense. All 10 OL on the two deep are juniors, sophomores or frosh. Future is bright. TE appears to be a position of need for future recruiting efforts.

Pilch, TE is actually in pretty good shape with 3 underclassmen and 2 seniors. Hopefully several of the others will work in some playing time but I doubt you carry more than 5 on an 85 man roster.

41 Devin Pike TE 6-6 245 SR Cincinnati, OH (Elder)
46 Nick Luedeke TE 6-5 265 RS FR Cary, NC (Holly Springs)
84 Brendan O'Neil TE 6-4 230 RS SO Burlington, MA (Buckingham Brown & Nichols)
85 Cam Serigne TE 6-3 245 RS SR Ashburn, VA (Briar Woods)
86 Jack Freudenthal TE 6-3 205 FR Glen Allen, VA (Trinity Episcopal)

Completely agree a lot of people's view of Wolford is based on their recollection of the year he got destroyed behind one of the worst offensive lines ever.

Brendan O'Neill is long gone and is playing either at UMass of U Maine. I thought Laronde Liverpool was playing TE though.

People's view of Wofford has been due to the fact he has been completely ineffective before the temple game. That's said he looked good in that game and it seemed to look really good in practice so throw him in there with a short leash
