CP3 takes on Trump

Well it also lost him his job and millions (potentially tens of millions) of dollars. But if that's what he was going for, then I guess he succeeded.

He had a platform and he used it to speak up for those that didn't knowing full well it might cost him his career. The fact that he did it anyway makes him a hero.

Kap is everything people say they want from their sports stars except his hair is too tall and his skin is too dark.

Classic misdirection.

Protesting against racial inequality, police brutality, injustice, etc. gets rephrased by others as being against the military, first responders, the good ol' USA etc.

The real question is...why the misdirection? Hmmmm???

Because his form of protest is not focused and it easily misconstrued. You yourself just rattled off "racial inequality, police brutality, injustice" and ended it with an "etc." Jesus Christ dude, you just demonstrated why the reactions are all over the place.

"I'm protesting a whole bunch of stuff, why don't you rubes understand exactly what I am protesting?"

He's protesting systemic racism which leads to all those things. His protest is no more broad than King's and if it were narrower it would be missing the forest for the trees.

He chose the national anthem, in part, because it is a symbol of America rooted in racism that still represents a racist nation. Individual Americans can disclaim racism all they want and most Americans aren't racist, but until we have removed racism from the structure of our political and economic systems America as a nation cannot disclaim racism.

It's an uncomfortable truth to be sure, and will require uncomfortable action to remedy. So if Kaepernick's protest makes you uncomfortable that's a start.

Do you agree that if his protest does not evolve from its current form, that nothing of substance will change or happen? That's my issue.

I'm not uncomfortable with it at all personally and certainly support players' right to do it. I do feel bad for the military members and their families who are hurt by it (maybe I'm uncomfortable via empathy). The lack of solution-oriented efforts and messaging is what annoys me. It just rings of protesting for the sake of protesting.

This rings hollow when the leader of the Conservative movement against the kneeling protest denigrated the service of John McCain and the parents of a fallen soldier during the presidential campaign. I understand that you personally never said those things and probably have sincere empathy, but the optics aren't good when Trump is the one would launched this controversy into the limelight, given Trump's past comments about members of the military and their families.

Right.

It's only easily misconstrued by any willing or inclined to misconstrue.

I'm pretty sure military members and their families are capable of handling much worse, unless you are suggesting that they are snowflakes.

If it makes those that served uncomfortable about their service that's a good thing. We need their voices more than anyone.

What solution-oriented messaging and efforts are shown on the site you linked? Looks like all he's doing at this time is a "Know Your Rights Camp". How is that helping the issues at hand?

And I know for a fact that it pisses some members/former members of the military off. But I guess call them snowflakes if you want. One is a marine about to be deployed to Okinawa in case Rocket Man decides to get even friskier.

Agree with the right for people to privately fly it/wear it/etc, but not by any form of government.

The confederate flag represents a far greater affront to the American military, the flag, and the nation than kneeling during the national anthem during a regionally televised football game.

Haven't met very many military men/women have you?

I have a family full of them, though my family is from the midwest and northeast and considers most confederate sympathizers (and southerners) to be rubes. They also hate Trump, though loved them some Cruz and Bush. I believe they were write-in voters in the election.

Are you a military man? I'm questioning your defense of the confederate flag.

It doesn't make me uncomfortable at all, Popovich. It's a nonviolent protest, good for them for doing it, they can do it all day long if they want. My issue is that it is misdirected, not well targeted, and having virtually no effect on what it is allegedly protesting against. I support them in their efforts to address police brutality and racism, but I think they are wasting their political capital on ineffective means that are easily distracted and won't likely lead to any actual change.

Finally someone speaking TRUTH.

You must have missed the dozens of charities he's donated to so far, mostly focused on empowering young minorities.

I'm not calling them snowflakes. But if kneeling during the national anthem pisses them off they either misunderstand the protest or what the anthem represents. I do feel for your friend who has to needlessly put his life in danger because our president has decided to play chicken with a madman.

It's targeted perfectly, IMO. The fact that you can't understand the connection between the anthem and the systemic racism Kap is protesting by kneeling during it means you don't understand the breadth and depth of the problem.

I don't think respecting the military and the sacrifices they are willing to, and do, make requires us to defer to them on what America stands for and what is/is not disrespectful to American ideals.

I imagine flying an Isis or Nazi flag in my front yard would piss off all of the military members that you know. Flying a Confederate flag is the same thing.
