Omnibus Bowl Projections Thread - Belk Bowl

Whoa. Serious vibes. Wouldn't State still go ahead of us with the better conference record, though? Or are we assuming they lose to UNC, here?

It's not subjective (or based on conference record), the criteria for the Orange Bowl is:

"ACC Champion, or highest ranked ACC team not selected for CFP semifinals"

So if we are the highest ranked team and Clemson and Miami both make it to the semis....yeah we'd go to the Orange Bowl.

Somebody tell the players. Added incentive to blowout State and make a statement that we're better

VT was #17 before losing to GT; they will still be ranked this week, and WF will not

meaning to vault over VT in the CFP rankings, VT will need to lose at least once, probably twice

VT closes the season vs. putrid Pitt and the horrible 'Hoos

With wins over State and Duke, we'd be at least close to ranked. State wouldn't be ranked if they lost to us even if they beat UNC and VPI will probably be 23/24 (where a loss to either Pitt or Virginia would likely keep them out the rankings). ETA: VPI isn't ranked in media or coaches poll after their GT loss so they may not be ranked this week at all.

I think if we beat State, we win out, and VPI loses to Pitt or Virginia the most likely scenario is that none of the three are ranked.

UVa could def beat 'em. Would be an upset but it's an in-state game and good way for the Hoos to cap a nice season.

VT's offense is pretty inept right now. Their QB in particular

Absolutely! This is about the players. Not an alum. Give the boys a nice vaction... as long as they take care of business.

That's fine and all, but we're not likely to get invited to Atlanta, Orlando or Jacksonville anyway; so Charlotte is a pretty good option, especially considering some of the other locations like Detroit and Shreveport.

I'm about getting into the best bowl we can get into. That's it. If there are great bowls we can get out West that are of equal stature, great. Give the players a cool trip with lots of swag.

Yeah it’s obviously for the players but I’d love I️t to be in a location I️ could attend. Either way, I️m drinking and enjoying the Deacs play football

That's great, but don't expect a huge Wake fan turnout. And there really aren't that many bowls out west of equal stature, let alone one that the ACC has a tie-in with.

Payout per team

Holiday $2.075 million
Sun $2.0 million
Music City $1.8375 million
Pinstripe $1.8 million
Belk $1.7 million
Texas $1.7 million

Would it be great to go to Santa Clara and play in the Foster Farms Bowl at Levi's Stadium ? Sure, but the payout is less than half of the Belk Bowl.

Biff, I'm not at all against Belk. That would be a fine matchup. Just don't put words in my mouth. I want what the players would seem to want, all things equal. And on attendance, Wake fans pride themselves on being more well-heeled than most, so paying for a flight somewhere shouldn't affect a good number of "us" who'd want to go. Secondly, most bowls rely primarily on locals to attend the games, and if the schools bring a lot so much the better. I'm sure any distant bowl would be pleased with, say, 5,000 tickets sold from Wake. So, a big meh on fans attending distant bowls. It is what it is.

That's fine, I'm just saying that in reality, all things are not equal.

For ACC teams, I think the bowl payout for a particular bowl is meaningless. Unless they changed the formula, each ACC team that makes a bowl is allotted a certain amount of the bowl payout to pay for expenses to travel to and stay at the bowl site. The rest of the bowl payout goes into an ACC pool which is shared equally among all ACC football teams. So, WF ends up with the same 2017-18 bowl payout whether it goes to Detroit, Charlotte, Santa Clara or Miami or no bowl. The one caveat is that teams often go over the expense payout if the athletic department wants to bring more people. Naturally, the expenses would be lower the closer the bowl is to WF, and less likely to exceed the expense budget.

Yeah, there's that and Loh also said "great bowls we can get out West that are of equal stature," and payout is the easiest measure of stature. Tradition and prestige is pretty subjective.

ETA: I'm not trying to pump the Charlotte bowl up, but it's a big step up from some of the other options.

Every bowl has its benefits.

Except for Shreveport

Having been to Shreveport, I will second this thought. The stadium there didn't even have a fresh coat of paint.

But the win was OHHHH SOOOO SWEEEET!!

Would love Nashville, anywhere in Fl and Charlotte in that order. Lots of fun things in nazhville.
