Danny Manning Credibility Watch

Childress is the good recruiter, not Manning, and I doubt he would play the same NBA style as Danny does. Fact is the head coach determines the schemes, not the assistants and that is the case here too. I am not advocating hiring Childress merely to save this incoming class but for the fact he bleeds black and gold and would hire whomever he has to trying to turn this around. Worthless talk anyway, Manning will be here as long as Chairman Ron is, and we all know he is a vampire and will be here forever.

What evidence is there that Childress is a good recruiter? The players that have been recruited while he has been on the staff have accomplished 1 First Four NCAA appearance. And lost that game.

Childress is my favorite Wake player of all time but that doesn't mean he should be on the coaching staff.

Isn't there a study or article somewhere that theorized that great players don't make good coaches? Something about their talent and natural aptitude in playing at a high level doesn't translate to teaching less gifted players what it actually takes to succeed? Perhaps related to this is the apparent lack of success of NBA players succeeding as college coaches. I'm thinking Isaiah Thomas (right?) and Sid Lowe, but I certainly don't follow hoops enough to know if this theory still has any merit. Seems it used to be talked about a good deal. If so, Manning has a double whammy against him being a great player and an NBA dude. Certainly would add substance to those theories.

Well, Collins, Crawford, Dinos, Hoard, Mucius and others who just chose better programs. He has missed on some sure, but so does everyone who can't just pick which players in the top 20 they want. (this was in response to Lilburn's question)

The entire 2016 class was a swing and a miss. Who knows if guys still playing high school ball will be any good. He’s recruiting abilities are seriously overrated.

Here we are stuck in the same position we were with Skip's death, or with Dino. We simply cannot fear canning a coach because of recruiting. That hamstrings us from doing what has to be done. Besides, given how the guys on the current roster are panning out (a few 4 star guys), why should we think the future will pan out any differently?

The fact is no competent coach or coaching staff should start out 0-3 with this schedule. It is a fireable offense, period. God forbid we start 0-4. 2-3 may be the beginning to salvaging an otherwise dismal season, but absent a huge turnaround, Manning has got to know he's on notice. No fifth year after this abomination barring a turnaround to fielding what looks like a semi-competent team. And when Manning goes, the whole staff goes. Can we please quit trying to save Randolph, who has been on the staff of two coaching failures so far? He will have to go too.

But most importantly, Wellman has to go. Clean slate. He has destroyed the basketball program. Time to retire.

This is a serious question, has there ever been a situation where an assistant coach was hired during a season solely to teach defense? Like a defensive consultant?

OH NO!

We've had so much success with him being on staff so far! WHAT WOULD WE EVER DO, SUPERFAN22?!

Crawford, COLLINS, Brown, Hoard, Muscius, Melo, Wright, Sarr, Greek and others. It’s not his fault that Manning sucks. He can’t overrule Manning on coaching decisions. Give him a year or two to save the recruits and see if he can game coach. If the defense continues to suck, hire somebody like Kelsey.

You can't give Childress credit for all our program's successes and none of the blame for the downfalls. That's weak. Manning gets at least some of the credit for our recruiting success, and Childress gets at least some of the blame for our on-court failure (he coaches guards, no? Great defense they're playing these days!).

If Childress wants the Wake Forest head coaching job, he should earn it, not be gifted it because of his name. He has never been part of a successful program as a coach. Never.

Honest question

Are these worse losses than buzz’s worst losses?

Yes.

Team is 0-3 with losses at home to Georgia southern and liberty. Then neutral to drake.
Making any excuse that these teams aren’t “that bad” is idiotic.

Wake has yet to play a good team. Duke will score 500

Manning‘s losses to GA Southern, Liberty, and Drake are worse collectively than [name redacted]‘s losses to Stetson, Hampton, and VCU. VCU was a really good team, as their NCAA run demonstrated. And those losses were in [name redacted]‘s first year. This is Manning‘s fourth.

Comparing records in November of year 4 might be a more relevant comparison. And I am not arguing that Buzz was ever the right man for the job.

Compared to what has happened recently, those are Wooden results.

Not excusing the debacle at the moment, but it's not exactly fair to compare year 4's when Manning sent two guys to the pros ahead of schedule and made the tourney in year 3.

Fast forward to next year and assume the incoming class puts us back in the tournament. Is Manning back into post-Louisville approval ratings or are the pitchforks still out?

I get it but
I don’t give a poop who went to nba. You don’t lose to Georgia southern, liberty and drake. Period

You think we are making the tourney next year? Jesus. Lay off the meth. We have 1 guy who is supposed to be an impact player. We have one other who should contribute, and 2 guys like Mitchell and Washington.

After CP3 left and Skip only won 3 ACC games with Justin Gray, Eric Williams, Stickland and Visser, there was a ton of chatter about firing him as well. And pretty much everyone loved Skip.

The outcry will be much louder if Manning doesn't get things turned around by ACC play.

Why would we assume that?
