Wake NC State 7:30 PM ESPNU Night Game!

I don’t care where we put ball. I’d have hated to rely on Weaver there. I’m pretty sure that extra point was on him too. And 2 or 3 timeouts, would have been tough to go length of field in short time on them. Think their defense was still tough even though we had some success.

I think best chance to win game was challenge spot. And then throw to get a first down or 2.

I guess you are wrong about best chance to win. Clawson held the TO in case he needed it and knew the clock was our enemy. And the XP block was again on the guard who got blown up. 0 for 3.

Clawson might not have perceived how bad the spot was, either. If some player didn't tell him, I'm not sure there was reason on the sidelines to doubt the official spot.

I saw him stare at the big screen for a replay. Which took forever to show up, and was a terrible angle. If he wasn't getting anything in his headset from coaches in Press Box, I understand why he didn't challenge. Our media folks need to be quicker.

Anybody think we could have taken a safety rather than punt? A touchdown wins it whether we are up 6 or 4. No chance for a block and probably would have pushed them much further back.

I think we were counting on better than a 32 yard punt. I didn't expect 55 against the breeze, but at an acc level, I think you should expect ~45 yards. Plus more hang time on punt, better coverage, harder to setup a return, harder to catch, and they muffed one already.

And NC State's kicker has been a disaster this year. Not so much on extra points, but has missed quite a few FGs. I think you make them make an extra point, especially since we've show we can block a FG with game on the line this year.

ETA: We punted from the 23. Maggio was on the 8, probably kicked from the 11 or so. So you automatically gain 9 yards. And whether you kickoff or punt from the 20, probably a deeper kicker with no pressure of a rush. I think the return is much different though. We went pooch kickoff against the wind. Weaver was hitting them to the 25-28 from the 35. So add 15 yards, 40-43 is where the ball was landing. And they had 5-15 yard returns on those, I think they end up in better field position, even after the 32 yard hook that Maggio hit. and a kickoff return is much more dangerous than a punt return, usually. So at best, they FC the pooch kickoff at the 40-43. You gain maybe 5 yards, but putting your coverage team at more risk, and you aren't making them make an extra point.

I do not trust punters or kickers to make any football play with the ball, other than kicking it. Sorry, but garo yepremian and that holder for wake against Clemson in our acc championship year ruined it for all kickers out there.

Punters are amazing athletes. And that holder, who was the backup kicker, also held 3 FGs perfectly, in the rain, in the ACC championship, which was the difference in the game.

Jon Temple, I remember that like it was yesterday. RIP Gaines Adams

Watch the video of Syracuse's return for 2 points after they blocked our PAT, Weaver almost ran that dude down. Weaver was showing some wheels I wouldn't have thought he had.

I posted yesterday. Why not kick off and just kick it OOB? Is there a penalty on a safety kickoff going OOB?

Should be the same penalty (illegal procedure) as a "normal" kickoff going OOB.

The only difference being a safety kickoff is a free kick and deeper inside your own territory.

Great win for our Deacons Saturday night, but was anyone else as annoyed as me with that soft zone we played all night? I get that we're trying to prevent the big play by keeping everything in front of us and make State earn the yardage, but State was able to convert 3rd and long easily all night. The defense remains on the field and State is able to methodically march down the field and score points.

Maybe it's a function of our young secondary or maybe it's that our pass rush was a bit hampered because Ejiofor was out. I don't know.

If Demetrius Kemp doesn't make a brilliant play as State is going in for what would be the go ahead score, then that strategy likely would have gotten us beat.

I think that's exactly why we did it and yes, it is very annoying to watch as State had it too easy picking up 3rd downs, but I think circumstances dictated it and at least it worked. Barely anyway. Of course the flip side of that is State was playing press coverage a lot and that allowed us to get some big plays and score points even though we didn't have a great game putting up yards. Be nice it we could play more of a mix though.

We held them to 24 points. The idea is to make them continuously execute while avoiding the big yardage play. Also, hopefully lull them into a situation where you can jump a route for a big play.

Even if they had scored there, we would have had the ball down 1.
