2017-18 Men's College Basketball Thread (NWT)

73, I agree about the 2016 class. On paper and in reality, it is a really good class. I was talking about this year and next year. Anthony isn't ready for primetime, but then again Hall was pretty rough this time freshman year. I had forgotten about Badocchi because he has the medical redshirt (and wasn't listed by at least 1 of the services). My UVA buddy who I go to the games with is pretty high on Badocchi. And I get that Bennett has been involved with a few 4*s but hasn't gotten any yet for whatever reason (and I recognize he isn't able to sell a ton of immediate PT, except at PF and C). My only beefs with Tony are that he took this 5'9" PG from CA and that some of his recent bigs lack athleticism. If you're going to play packline and double big to big, it helps to have taller Gs and athletic bigs. It's okay to have 1 Tobey or Huff at a time, but that defense is beautiful to watch when you have 3 of your 4 bigs more like Atkins, Mitchell and Wilkins, who were all 3* guys as I recall. And he really needs someone to fill Wilkins' shoes because he the best big Tony has on the defensive end. The other thing is I'd really like them to try to feature Hunter a bit more. He's getting some run as it is, but he has nice touch and form on his shot and is seriously athletic. He could be a star in a couple of years.

As for running off, there's running off and running off. I'm sure he didn't tell Reuter, Thompson and Shayok they had to go. That said, I strongly suspect he also told them that they'd have considerably reduced roles this season, and they were able to read between the lines. And I'm more than fine with that when it comes to Reuter and Thompson - Reuter especially didn't belong playing on this level. I felt a little bad for Shayok because he seems like a good kid and was a decent player (though certainly not exceptional). Don't get me wrong. I really like Tony and love going to UVA games now. It's great to watch fundamentally sound teams, especially when you compare them with Gillen's and Leitao's teams - ugh (add to that Leitao was an abusive jerk). That said, I'm a little apprehensive about next year's class at this point.

Among other things: First, when talking athletic front court players, you should probably include Diakite. At the moment, it would appear that he is the heir to Wilkins' spot. He is more athletic than Wilkins, and he is now displaying more offensive skills than a jump shot. If he continues to follow the developmental curve upon which he finds himself, that position will be okay. Presumably, Hunter will replace Hall in the starting line-up. Stattman remains a bit of an unknown. Also, it is yet to be learned if Clark's blossoming during the summer was an aberration or simply natural development. As long as Anthony adjusts to the college game (and, I like very much what I have seen from him thus far), Virginia should have, at the very least, adequate depth in the back court, but I could easily see Bennett taking another guard during the spring. Finally, Shayok and Thompson were the only players on the squad whose efficiency profiles were on the wrong side of 0.

Diakite is athletic and seems like a good kid. But his basketball IQ isn't always the greatest, although I think it's getting better (the guy behind us is always complaining about him, but I think he's cut back on dumb fouls and being out of position). Even then, you need a 4th big for next year to go with Diakite, Salt and Huff, especially when Tony won't play Huff in bad match-up games for him. Either that, or he plays Hunter at the 4, in which event Tony wouldn't double in the post (he doesn't double with 1 big and 4 wings). I'd really like to see him land an athletic big in this class, even if said big is offensively challenged.

There is some buzz circulating about another 'big', but it seems more like wishful thinking than anything else. I think Virginia fans will have to pin their hopes on the staff's ability to develop Huff. Also, it will be interesting to see what a season with Mike Curtis does for Frankie Badocchi. Between Badocchi and Huff, I am are hoping the staff can cobble out a substitution pattern, situational though it may be.

ACC 9-1 vs. the B10 so far.

Wow, first 5 min I've seen of this dook team and I already hate them.

Calipari's dirty grease is all over K now. Feel like I need to take a shower every time I see Bagley in a Duke uniform. He got reclassified and was enrolled at Duke in span of like 10 days.

Yeah, no offense to LD, but I hope Brown is a heck of a lot better player Han LD. He was an awful offensive player. Heck of a defender though.

Agree, but certainly one of the most electric dunkers we've ever had. Could be at the top of the list.

I saw Bagley go head to head with javale mcgee this summer and he did pretty well

LD was a HOF practice player. He couldn't miss during the summer.

11-2 ACC going into tonight's final game.

Put that ass whoopin' on them this season. Boston College and Louisville didn't hold their weight per usual.

Seems like the ACC's gonna get a lot of tourney bids. If we hold our own in conference play, maybe these terrible losses won't matter at all !

Or we're about to get absolutely destroyed by the gauntlet

The bottom of the league isn't great, but according to KP there are 6 top 25 teams, 9 top 50 teams, 14 top 100 teams, and then Pitt at 157.

How long til KenPom rankings are based completely on this season and everything else is washed out? Or does that ever happen?

After dominating the ACC/Bog 10 challenge (note that Pitt did not participate), the ACC is up to #2 in the conference ratings (Big 12 is #1).

After playing Coastal Carolina on December 18, WF does not play another team outside the top 100 for more than 2 months (16 games) until WF travels to Pitt on February 21. WF's schedule is about to get brutal (the schedule includes a December 23 home game against #27 Tennessee, who has played great this year: beat Purdue, NC State and Mercer -- the Paradise Jam runner up -- by 24; TN's only loss is to #2 Villanova in a 9 point game -- TN led at the half).

I came across the Duke/IU game last night early in the second half and watched until ~4 minutes left. If that's what college basketball is now, I don't think I'll be able to stomach it. For a stretch of several minutes, every single possession resulted in a whistle. Every. Single. Possession. It was a raucous environment, #1 team in the country with ludicrous talent, and an undermatched but still fired up home team with a historic pedigree... and the primary takeaway was the constant whistles. Just brutal to try to watch.
