Triad restaurant comings, goings and recs

Trade St. Diner where Sweet Potatoes used to be isn't really a diner, either. Full bar. Interesting concept.

Pretty sure the folks who opened this are the same ones fro the aforementioned Towne Centre Diner in Wallburg. Haven't been to the trade st. one but can rec the Hwy 109 location.

Unrelated: Dickey's on Jonestown has closed. Kind of old news, but bring up the opportunity to discuss the how hard it is to have a non-Lexington-style bbq place around here. although Honky Tonk on the other end of Jonestown seems to be doing OK.

Dickeys is/was terrible. Bibbs isn't strictly NC style, but they are successful.

Dickeys had the same gross generic barbecue that you would get if you ordered the barbecue at Shoneys or Cracker Barrel, dry greasy fatty meat with gloppy syrupy sauce. You could just tell it came frozen in a bag and they just reheated it in boiling water.

I'm going to agree with that. I went to one in Raleigh once and I looked at my place of beef and thought it all looked like it was scooped up from what fell from the meat cutter - just little pieces of meat, like fish food almost.

Also, the Tiki Grill in north Winston way out Robinhood has closed after 3 months. Was kind of looking forward to going there at some point but would have thought of it as a summer spot. It's too bad they couldn't have opened earlier to build that customer base. But I never went so I can't say if it was good or bad, just liked the concept.

Dickie's BBQ in Cary Crossroads here also recently closed- the door was padlocked by order of the sheriff.

Obviously not a good sign.

Not that many of you have probably been there, but Wayward Brews on 150 near the FoCo/Davidson line is shutting down this month after a year and a half of "business."

It gives me a chance to rant, though. These bitches hired me away from a job to manage and start their gourmet coffee purchases and menu. I also did some brewery tours and tastings, and gave input on what to serve. I patched and painted all the walls, hauled in ridiculously priced niche furniture, and helped setup all the coffee equipment. I also trained the entire staff on coffee and beer before they opened. Well, as it turned out, they put all of their life savings up just to get the place open, to the point of me driving from there to Cornelius to take apart Ass Clown's (great brewery, BTW) mobile tap system to get a dozen couplers, which the idiot didn't know didn't come with her fancy tap system, the night before they opened. Ass Clown sold them the couplers, on credit, later.

Two weeks later, after no attempt to advertise besides free on Facebook, they tell me that they can't afford me anymore. I agreed to a $5/hr and 10 hr/week pay cut, and was fired two days later because a customer overheard me telling a staff member that I was now the lowest paid manager in W-S, which wasn't a lie, either. Fine, So be it.

Two months later, I get a flurry of IMs on facebook telling me to look at their page, so I cruise over to find that they're starting a gofundme page to raise money for an "unexpected facility payment" to the landlord so they could stay open. I would have quit over that, anyway, as I do not believe in begging for money, especially from my own customers.

So, a few days ago, my inbox blows up again, so I cruise back over to their page to see a long, weepy post about how this was their dream, but it can't support itself, one of the owners has taken an "important job", and they're closing.

Good riddance.

Bah!

Hope you were able to get back on your feet without too much trouble. Wayward Brews was out in my neck of the woods, but I never went there, based entirely on your previous (later deleted) rant. It is a shame when local businesses go under, but it sucks more when they bring other people down with them because they don't have a plan or are dishonest about their situation.

Heard there’s a Burger Batch opening in the Palladium area of High Point.

Man, Carolina deli on spring garden is fucking tits.

I lived near the intersection of Spring Garden/Aycock for three years. I definitely miss walking to Yum Yum, Old Town, Jack's Corner, the Lindley Park joints, and all the Tate Street places.

Yeah man. I just went back to the Deli for lunch and I did horrible things to my body.

Same newly constructed development with Duck Donuts.

For reals?!? I work in Jamestown and my director and I hit up Big Burger Spot all the time! Would love to take down some Burger Batch. Sadly, I have not visited the Winston location yet. I just don't get downtown much.

Hey, we're getting a baseball stadium and everything.
