SPOILERS: Star Wars: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread SPOILERS

I love how this film echoed many Empire plot points will making them unique. Like Rey leaving her training to confront Kylo Ren was very similar to Luke leaving his training to confront Vader, but it was very much its own thing.

Her Darkside Cave experience is another example.

Pretty meh for me, good movie but I didn’t get really much out of it like I was hoping. “Star Wars” is two things to me, the galaxy and the characters. The galaxy part was disappointing. Nothing happened? We saw 2 new planets and one was just a redo of something we’ve seen before. The balance of power in the galaxy is the exact same as it was before. Nothing changed. We’re at the same place we started.

Indeed, Crait was Hoth redux, but the salt over red clay was fucking cool.

I was completely surprised when she space wizarded back from death.

That was totally weird.

I'm really sad that Luke's gone - he was basically my first movie hero. But, that was a pretty BA way to go.

Was there any significance to seeing Phasma's eye under the chrome dome? And is she actually dead? Seemed like she could've been dead after being sent to the trash compactor in TFA, but she returned.

I really enjoyed it. There are certainly some issues but thought it was fun. Agree with the idea that they changed the way the resistance was focusing on their fight. Hopefully that is true.

Also, agree with Lilburn about the knights of Ren. Not a throwaway to mention Ben took some other students with him.we saw a flash of them in the last movie so they'll be back.

I thought a lot of the similarities to empire were more fan service or easter eggy than a complete rip off. Paying homage if you will. Making the sand look like snow before exposing the red underneath, the x wing under water, Rey going into the dark side pit during training. Saw a review that thought this one was a re-set using empire and Jedi aspects to jump forward into a new way to complete this trilogy and move into the next phase. Still considering that idea. The review was not spoilers so I'm thinking about what those points might be.

The knights were definitely alluded to when they said Ben took some students with him and in Force Awakens Snoke reminds him he's the leader of the Knights of Ren and it sounds like a big deal.

Snoke definitely needs to be someone. How does a disfigured dark force guy rise up and just take over the Empire?

He’s gotta be the Emperor or a failed clone or something.

But how much backstory do we need?

The Sith took control of the government. Another Sith replaced the Emperor.

Another movie then. Where did a Smith Lord come from when Vader and Palpatine died? Why is his left side sunken in?

Except that Snoke wasn't Sith, just strong with the dark side.

The count is now 2 intriguing bad guys that everyone wanted to get a ton more screen time only to wind up getting sliced in half by a lightsaber.

Though I don't think Snoke survived his dismemberment.

The title of the thread is SPOILERS

I loved it and so did my family

I originally thought people were mad that their questions went unanswered. Now I think people are mad their questions were irrelevant.

For decades, Star Wars fans were so starved of content that we tried to explain minutia that ultimately didn't matter much. I think we have to untrain ourselves and get used to having so much content that we don't need to overthink things.

Still unpacking, need to see it again, but I think I loved it. First hour and a bit was Empire redux with twists, and I was fine with that. Loved where it went from there. I understand criticism of not getting the snoke backstory. Don't give a shit about phasma. There is no love story (yet) and I think it hurts Finn. Wife is convinced Rey and Ren are in love. The lightspeed into Snoke's ship, and scene in Snoke's red lair were just fantastic. I loved how it ended for Luke, he'll play a role in the next one. Yoda looked weird. Driver is excellent as Ren - concern is that both he and Rey are weak (in terms of ability) compared to Snoke and Luke. I guess they are the most powerful characters left, but it takes something away that they are weaker than their forebears. In any event, it will be interesting to see where it goes from here, could go anywhere, which is great. Kind of wish it wasn't Abrams though.

I'm not sure why you think that. There's no evidence of the first and the second is more of an experience vs. potential thing.

The lack of a love story worked for me so far. They're just trying to stay alive. I'm still scarred from Anakin and Padme. Now they've set up a potential Rose-Finn-Rey triangle. Who knows what could spark between Rey and Poe?

Am I the only one who didn't quite get what happened with Luke? Why he disappear at the end? weaksauce.

Lots of reasons. Rey is simple: she is just learning how to move rocks. I kind of wish she had more training from Luke. She'll have to take a big leap to get to what Luke was capable of.

Kylo has his emo tantrums, has a bastardized version of the force, was defeated by Rey in her first lightsaber battle, was manipulated by Snoke to get Rey there - unless you think Kylo somehow orchestrated that, but that is not how it seemed to me. Sure, he got the better of Snoke, but it certainly wasn't based on his sheer power.

Kylo was severely injured from the blast from Chewy's bowcaster and other injuries I noticed in my recent viewing. He was severely weakened. Rey was strong in the force, raw obviously. But she was a capable fighter. And someone doesn't have to be an experienced force wielder to be competent with a lightsaber. All that was established leading up to the TFA climax.

Kylo's plan was clearly to use Rey as a distraction to kill Snoke. His other plan was to recruit Rey to be his #2. Given that, it seems clear that he was not manipulated into connecting with Rey.

Even accepting your argument, what does it matter given that Kylo and Rey are far more powerful than anybody else we know is around in this universe?

Random thought. Anybody else think that the allies who didn't answer Leia's distress signal could be the subject of the Rion Johnson trilogy?

I don't think it was clear that was his intent going in. It could have been, but I don't think it's one of those unquestionable things. He very well could have been playing lap dog like he always had to Snoke, and struck only when he saw the opportunity, or when he saw Rey's ability/power to resist.

Could it be possible that Kylo's explanation of Rey's parentage was a misdirect, and that she really is a Skywalker or Solo and he knew that if she knew that, she'd never turn?

I'm not one of those that NEED Rey to have some meaningful lineage, but I think it makes more sense to the story as a whole, and feel like her parentage holds the key to her Force leanings.
