NFL Offseason Thread: 2018 NFL Draft

Rumors that this might be the last year of the Kraft-Belichick-Brady trio. And it just so happens that the only other NFL team where Belichick would coach has an opening. Work that Gettlemagic, fat man! Bring him home!

You mean one bogus ESPN article rumors? I'm far from a Pats or Brady fan, but this is pretty awful journalism. Pretty sure I just heard Jimmy G say the other day that he and Brady are still close/keep in touch, and Hoyer raves about how much Brady has helped him in his career.

You are asking a question to the guy who thinks drafting two QBs in the first 4 picks is a good idea.

Don't do that.

This from the guy whose own team's greatest period of success came from basically that exact same strategy. Doesn't get much better than that. How bout em?

Danny White and Roger Staubach weren't taken in the same draft. Staubach is ten years older.

Is Lamar Jackson RG111 redux? I have heard him interviewed and he doesn't sound particularly bright, but RGIII WAS/IS bright ...

There must be some reason a majority of experts and GMs expect him to struggle as a QB. But I had the 10th pick and I was on the cusp of taking Baker Maysfield, I think I would be scared to death that Lamar Jackson was going to be a Michael Vick style transformative QB while I am starting a poor man's Drew Brees who thinks he's Brett Favre.

And I have loved Baker in college as an OU fan since I was 7.

Lamar Jackson turns 21 this weekend. He's a 3 year starter. He won the Heisman at 19 and was a Heisman finalist this year. He's gotten significantly better each year. I don't think he can start right away, but I would definitely draft him if I had an aging QB and 2-3 years to groom the next big thing. If I was the Saints or Steelers, I'd give him a very serious look.

The issue I have with Jackson is that he'll break in half like RG3 did. Mayfield can run too, but he has a thick body, ala Wilson. Jackson is darn thin, and I don't see him playing 16 games a year. If and when he does start, he'll miss at least as much time as Sam Bradford. That said, I think Jackson may end up being pretty good. To my untrained eye, Rosen is a sure thing. Darnold may have a higher ceiling than Rosen, but he has a way lower floor. I just don't like Mayfield and don't see him being great. Allen has accuracy issues. Jackson could be good but will be injury plagued. The other guy I like is Rudolph. He had a nice game against VT, and that VT D is sending a few guys to the NFL.

Walsh was taken in the supplemental draft. Not #4 overall.

How bout dem apples?

Ummm, they had to give up a first round pick in the next year's draft to get him, which ended up being the #1 overall pick. So yeah, he was basically #1 overall not #4. So a Aikman was a #1 pick and Walsh cost a #1 pick, and they came in the same year. Typical clueless Cowboys fan behavior.

They had no clue what the pick would end up being when they drafted him. Just like you have no clue about anything ever.

10 years, ~$100mil seems like a lot for Gruden. I like the guy, but he hasn't coached in a decade and didn't have much success with the Bucs after that first Super Bowl year.

They had just gone 3-13, their coach of 25+ years had just resigned, and they drafted two rookie QBs to compete for the starting job. I'm pretty sure they knew the general range of where the pick would be.

It wouldn’t be the post season without some shitty ESPN “journalism” for the patriots team to rally around.

I think the most likely outcome for Lamar Jackson's NFL career is something along the lines of Brad Smith. I don't think he'll ever play much QB at the next level.

Give me Rosen... Everyone else seems like a crapshoot, including Darnold.

Yeah. Shows that it pays to talk a good game.

Yeah, I think the Gruden move is less about putting together a winning formula than getting a big name who they hope will fill seats with fannies.

I think Jackson has far more upside than RG3 had. I just think the RG3 fail is hurting athletic QBs stock.

RG3's problem, I am convinced, is/was peripheral vision. The dude simply could not see a pass rusher once he locked in on a wide receiver. I actually think/worry that Kevin Hinton has the same issue. Hope I am wrong. I seem to recall Hinton taking some big hits his first sophomore year when rolling out. He'd find a receiver and throw and then pummeled out of bounds.

I have never seen a QB take the hits that RG3 took in the pros. While I do not recall him taking that type of pummeling in college, I watched very little Baylor ball. I have watched L Jackson and I haven't seen him take big hits like that. I don't see anything in his game to predict he'll be brittle and miss a lot of games.

I do anticipate the ESPN 30 x 30 in 15 years distinguishing RG3 and Russell Wilson. If any draft expert can figure the qualities that differentiated Wilson's decision making from RG3, they should be able to make a lot of money.

Russell Wilson threw a ton of balls away at NC State when his receivers couldn't get free and I suppose he was on a stupid short leash at the time, which was likely a huge mistake. I don't recall him showing elite elusiveness in college. That said, he was going to be drafted for baseball too, and I think historically those QBs who were also elites in other sports (John Elway, for example) have proven to mostly play above their draft position.

Agree. Would be hilarious if Gruden totally flops this go around. Not an easy contract to escape from. Gruden must like Vegas.

Of all the relocation moves, the Raiders in Vegas seems like the best bet for fans/sell outs, etc. Lots of ex-Angelinos there and who doesn't want to go to Vegas to see their favorite team play?

It's gonna be hard to say no the first time the panthers play there.
